Question 1 piece vs 3 piece wheels

I've seen both 1 piece and 3 piece wheels I like and want to get something to replace my stock 996 turbo wheels.

What's the difference?

thx, David

kem is infamous around these parts
3 piece wheels are made to be seperate pieces, for instance the face and barrel are seperate parts. The good part is if you crack a barrel all you need to do is replace it, the face is still fine, can save you money. 3 piece wheels also have that 3-piece look (the bolts all around the rim usually) which some people like. Most 3 piece wheels have forged faces but cast barrels. 3 piece wheels are also usually heavier then their 1 piece counterpart.

1 piece forged wheels are going to be the lightest wheels your going to find.

hope that sheds some light, Im sure others will be able to add onto what I said.

1 piece forged wheels are lighter than 3 piece , and 3 piece wheels crack because they use different metals for the lips the inners and the face of the wheels.

Any wheel can crack. I don't know that multi-piece wheels are any more prone than one-piece.

I don't think this is exactly correct!

In my experience 1 piece high pressure cast wheels are more durable than 3 piece. However my 3 piece experience was running BBS 3 piece race wheels on the street (on a 928). With 3 piece wheels you can get near the exact size and offset you want if you're going for the absolute maximum wheel width.

I dont think its the fact that its 3-piece that makes it prone to crack, its that almost all 3-piece wheels have forged faces, but cast barrels. So the barrels won't be as durable as a 1-piece forged wheel, but probably equally durable to a 1piece cast wheel.
