Are the 6GT2/GT3/Cup levers all same part or is there an advantage to going with the Cup over the GT?
The regular 7GT2 (non RS) has the counterweight, at least the one car I looked at on a lift.

The Cup lever is what is used on both the 6GT2/3 and 7GT3.

Thank you John. Thinking to do this when I do the LSD. I know it is more work, but if trans is coming out anyway....

It's actually not much work with the gearbox out. Probably 1-2hrs labor. You will also need the shift cable bracket which is bolted to the outside of the gearbox to properly align the cables with the shorter lever.

Has anyone tried pulling the counterweights off the turbo shift levers. For me I did not want to shorten the throw so I did not do the lever upgrade when my tranny was out.

Done on mine, can't say I noticed a dramatic difference but it didn't hurt anything either.

I did it on mine. Shifts are more notchy, faster and lighter feel. Not as smooth as or lazy as with counter weights. If you drive aggressively it's worth it, if yours is more of a gt car I'd leave them.

as an fyi its a countersunk torx bolt that held my weights in. took all of 30 seconds to strip the heads on both! had to drill them out to remove the weights. since the trans was out it was a simple fix for the bolts. if the trans is in the car it may be more difficult if the bolts strip

Btw. could removal of these weights help prevent 2nd gear pop?

Not sure, about this. Adding the 8mm ball mod to mine made 95% of it go away.

since the nature of 2nd gear popout is improper shimming at the gearset removing the weights should have no effect on popout
