Question What could still be causing wheelhop?

Hey Guys,

I recently discovered my stock coil-overs were completely shot (Literally no dampening). I upgraded to Ohlins Road & Track. I've always had wheel hop, so I figured this would fix the problem, but no dice.

The car still hops violently when I dump the clutch from 4500 rpm.

I'm looking for advice on what to upgrade next to try and eliminate this terrible wheelhop...

Suspension Upgrades:

- Ohlins road and track coils
- Full monoball ERP toearms and dogbones
- Torque Semi-solid engine mounts
- Semi-solid trans mount

I think the only thing I don't have is the control arms. Could this be the cause? My understanding was that toe flex is what caused wheel-hop.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

owned many AWD cars, turbo, Eclipse GSX, 2x evos - Audi s4, To be honest I never launched my car yet. LOL i feel like something will take a BEEEEP when i do that, (i have a feeling that i will destroy something..) - so I take off with feelings - plus my clutch wants to destroy my chin, engages high and HARD.

Its definitely the rear. My car is a gt2, so it couldn't be a traction issue with the front wheels, as they're not powered.

I think we use our cars for very different things then. I would advice against dumping the clutch without some experience.

0.14 degrees on both sides. Could that be the cause?

Hey Max, try 34-36 and soften the rear for extreme launching stuff. Tires and suspension are fighting eachother.

stiffness of rear shocks. get solid bearings and solid pucks for rear lower control arms. check toe specs.

From what I recall curing wheel hop in cars equipped with solid rear axles was hard. It often required ladder bars to prevent axle twisting.

With the advent of IRS wheel hop was a real pain. I used to know a couple of guys who street raced a Corvette, circa a 1969 MY. The car's factory engine was removed and a larger displacement engine and with some mods to allow the engine to really put out the HP was installed in its place. Wheel hop, in fact drive train longevity, was a real problem. Eventually the owner tired of the expense and had the mod'd engine removed -- a friend of mine installed it in his early Firebird -- and had a stock engine, 396ci IIRC, installed and put an end to his street racing days.

I have only "dumped the clutch" a few times -- total -- with my Boxster, GTO, and Turbo all of course fitted with IRS.

With all 3 the clutch was dumped with sufficient RPMs that the rear tires broke loose. Thus there was no wheel hop.

If you just want to dump the clutch and avoid wheel hop raise the RPMs at which you dump the clutch. The idea is you break loose the rear tires and can modulate the throttle to control to some extent the amount of traction so the car just doesn't sit and spin its rear tires, unless of course this is what you want to do.

If you want to effect an efficient launch I think you are probably going to have to develop a new launch technique that avoids not only wheel hop but also excessive wheel spin. It will almost certainly exact a toll on clutch life.

What contributes to wheel hop is the normal give the suspension has from the rubber (if stock) bushings. Even aftermarket firmer bushings have some give or the car would ride like a covered wagon.

Since most owners seek better handling, better tire grip, a lower car for cosmetic reasons, most suspension mods are geared towards those objectives. Controlling wheel hop, dealing with wheel hop, is not a concern because it doesn't occur because of the way the cars are driven, how they are used.

Visit a drag strip and observe 996 Turbos or just 996 Carrera cars how they launch. Pay particular attention to the cars that launch without wheel hop. Observe how they are launched. Then seek out the car in the pits and ask the owner/driver what he has done to quell wheel hop.

r888 wheel hop easily, if running 30 sidewall than I dont know if anything to be done to avoid wheel hop. I would try some DRs or bigger sidewall if you want to address tire and not suspension
