Difference between 01-02 and 03-05 cam sensors?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between the cam sensors found on 2001-2002 996's vs 2003-2004. They are a different part number.
I was wondering if they are physically externally different, as in connector, OR, do they differ internally?

TIA!

Well folks, just to get closure on this topic, the 2001-2002 cam sensors are part number 996 606 106 02 and the 2003-2005 cam sensors are 996 606 106 03.

May seem like just an updated part number, but in fact, the early sensors are not compatible with late ecu.

My car is a 2003, and I have been chasing an issue ever since putting my engine back together with SRM k24+ and internals. The issue was that the high lift cam was reverting back to low lift at anything past 5000rpm, causing a HUGE loss in power.

No engine light, no codes, no other symptoms other than that. The difference was even audible, in that the engine lost it's aggressive induction noise when this occurred.

Long story short, I mistakenly installed the wrong pair when reassembling the motor, not even thinking that there are differences between the years...
installed the 03 suffix ones, and all is well.

My next post will be of dyno results and 1/4 mile times !

Moral of the story, don't be like me. Know that there are different cam sensors out there! I guess this isn't something that would happen to most people, as they don't have parts of various projects lying round...

No, none of that was affected. Just high lift cam operation past 5000rpm or so.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. Congrats on figuring this all out.

I wonder if the -03 version works on 01-02 vehicles, or if the -02 version is required?

You're very welcome. As a matter of fact, I had mistakenly installed my 03 version on an 01, and there were no I'll effects at all.
