Caveat Emptor. That stuff is cheap for a reason. Hell even the expensive ones for this car need work, but there's no salvaging that. Hope you paid via paypal or credit card, you should be able to recoup.

I've done fiberglass parts for several cars now, and gone with cheap and expensive. Even the expensive ones still need a bit of work and finessing for proper fitment usually.

At this point, I generally recommend going with factory pieces only. By the time you factor in the extra cost of having a body shop fix some of these aftermarket pieces, you have spent almost the same amount as getting the factory original pieces.

So, yes I got my money back. I purchased this somewhat expecting a bunch of work being needed. And also knowing buying cheap was a risk. But with a paypal and ebay guarantee the risk was minimal really seeing it allowed me to provide real first hand feedback on what could be a tempting option for some for the price.

A week after receiving this and starting the return process due to being a damaged item i picked up a precision one for $305.

As for the factory decklid, good luck finding one. And for almost $9000, you could probably get a custom one made with superior quality out of carbon fiber. The quality of the factory one is just not there to justify price. Unless you absolutely have to have only things that come in a porsche box. And the factory one is fiberglass as well so it will also likely need work prior to installation.

Honestly, why does anyone go through the trouble of selling something like that? Especially through eBay with Paypal. You know it's coming back before you've even gone through the trouble of boxing it. If I pulled something like that out of a mold, I'd think:"bummer. I f...ed up" and toss it. Why?

No - at least no more than any other factory body part. You think Porsche had people on the assy line sculpting GT2 wings from bondo? There is often a huge premium on Porsche parts and some parts can be copied for much less. But generally, Porsche parts fit and work and there is an enormous difference to aftermarket parts.

do you really think porsche makes all their own parts? cases from spain windshields from the chec republic etc. theres likley a thousand different companies that make parts for porsche . seat from recaro shocks from bilstein why would fiberglass decklids be any different?

its all about the q/c required by the end user. truth is many aftermarket use the same molds just dont q/c the parts as well

No Steve, I really don't. But an OEM part is an OEM part. That does not make them without flaws, but they are by and large quite a bit better than aftermarket parts. Because they have to be and because OEM suppliers have resources far beyond that of most aftermarket companies.

Do You really think Porsche has time to stop the assy line while while parts are fitted to a body? Even in limited series such as the GT2, parts that come from an OEM supplier are generally on a different level than aftermarket. There are exceptions.

BTW, I live about 1/2 hrs drive from the company that made most of the 996/7 bumper skins, and about an hours drive from a company that made a good number of the Porsche spoilers throughout the years. And probably even closer to many companies I don't know about. And I've worked in the automotive supplier industry. But cheers - and thanks for your concern.

I think it is one thing to say that factory parts are quality and another to say some parts require more fitting and/or prep. I don't doubt reports of the factory being of quality. But unless you or anyone else can report with direct experience of what is needed to fit and finish a factory new raw GT2 spoiler lid than really we are all in speculation. What i know for a fact is the factory GT2 spoiler lid is fiberglass. And I know that not many people purchase new GT2 factory spoilers to install. So maybe someone here should share pictures or other empirical evidence before we get carried away romanticizing factory parts.

I can't imagine a brand new oem GT2 deck lid would look anywhere near as bad as this does on the the inside/backside.

I'd love to see a brand new GT2 deck lid in person just out of curiosity. I've worked with fiberglass in the past so I know they require work but for $8800 I expect it to jump out of the box and INSTALL ITSELF perfectly with precise gaps all around on my car...lol If I have to sand down and build up to fit a part that costs that much I will be really, really, pissed!!!!!!!

I've heard great things about the Precision GT2 lid. VAGscum, you bought a Precision version as well?? How is that one.??
