I remember my mechanic telling me if fuel gauge isn't reading right or a replacement of fuel pump requires a re-calibration of fuel.

"Calibrating fuel level sensor system"
1. Disconnect the battery and cover terminal or battery.
2. Remove cap over the fuel level sensor system.
3. Remove fuel level sensor. Removing and installing fuel pump.
4. Using a fuel extractor, completely drain the fuel tank through the fuel level sensor opening.
5. Make sure that the two recesses on the left and right hand sides of the tank are emptied completely.
6. Reinstall the fuel level sensor and, with "ignition off", fill the tank with exactly 28 liters of fuel.
7. Perform tank calibration with the Porsche System Tester 2 (PIWIS or Durametric):
- Select vehicle type (911 Turbo)
- Select control modules
- Select instrument cluster
- Select menu item "Tank calibration"
- Confirm calibration
8. The fuel level sensor system has now been calibrated."

What I do now is; when the light comes on, I make a mental note of mileage, ignore everything gauge or computer is telling me, I slow down and look for the first petrol station. If none is imminent, I just make sure I get to the petrol station within 50 miles.

Directly from factory repair manual:

9023 Fuel level display
Problem Remedy
If the power supply is interrupted by a discharged or
disconnected battery with the tank containing less than
19 l, the calculated value for the range on remaining
fuel in the instrument cluster will be incorrect or
deleted.
·
If the tank contains less than 10 l, it is possible that the
fuel level warning light is no longer activated.
·
If the power supply is restored with the fuel level at
less than 19 l, it is possible that the fuel level display
may subsequently display too much.
·
This may lead to the vehicle breaking down.
Refill at least 19 l of fuel; then the
fuel level sensor is in operating
range and its display precision is
guaranteed.

Can anyone confirm that they successfully recalibrated their fuel level sender unit with the Durametric. I don't see anywhere in the Durametric program where "Tank calibration" is an option.

Regarding the above procedure what is a wrong reading?

When I fill up, the gauge reads just above the top line. When I hit reserve and fuel warning light comes on I am just above the bottom line (see the initial photo). So are some other people. We all have approx 50 miles to empty left at that point.

So what is a wrong reading?

This procedure sounds like a pig job to do!
