Draining fuel tank.

I'm getting my car ready to install my new engine. I've got a tank full of 3 year old fuel that I had better drain. Has anyone done this?

Durametric, turn on the fuel pump, disconnect a fuel line - near the fuel cooler is a good spot, and pump all the fuel out till it's empty. This is the best way as syphoning is pretty impossible with the way the tank is.

I'm actually trying to drain my tank right now for a pump replacement. I disconnected the supply hose at the level sending unit and connected a hose to a gas can. I thought when I turned the ignition to on, the pump would turn on but it doesn't, I'm gonna try to activate it with my Durametric.

Hello,

I did this not too long ago. I got a bad batch of fuel from a local Chevron and had to siphon all of it out.

I bought a 15 dollar siphon from Harbor Freight:
https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TC-.../dp/B00BC4SKSW

Pop the Frunk and remove the fuel pump assembly unit. You can sneak the hose of the siphon down to the tank from there and I was able to siphon out 90% or so of the remaining fuel. There are some sleeves in the tank that snake down by both wheel well that I had a hard time getting with this cheap siphon, but it worked far better than I was expecting.

This link helped a lot :

Please PM me if you have any questions, I would be happy to help.

So I just tried the pump trick, it would work for about 15 seconds (1/3 gallon) then it seemed like the pump would lose suction. The gas in the hose became really foamy and stopped flowing out. When I hooked the supply hose back up and start the car, then try again, it pumps for another 15 seconds and loses suction again. I think the problem with this method is that the pump suction in the basket can't keep up with the higher flow from no back pressure. I guess that's why the manual says to syphon it out.

I've drained the tank a number of times now swapping between race gas and pump. If you disconnect so there is no return (pump it into an external container) the foam has to be coming from the lift Venturi in the bottom of the tank which isn't a good thing. I'd check that out.

Btw - the manual states to check fuel pump flow to disconnect at the engine and pump into a jug for 30secs to measure the fuel volume. So it should pump longer than 15seconds.

I'll try the durametric. I have nothing in my car so hopefully it will pump it out of the filter.

The durametric worked. Thanks for the help. My pump runs continuously and fuel comes out of the line as pictured.

Burns slowly. Probably junk gas.

Ok, that's interesting. The procedure for replacing the fuel pump states to syphon the gas out. Maybe that's because they assume your pump is dead if you're replacing it.
I thought that my Venturi tubes might be leaking air into the suction of the pump but when I checked it the tank, they seemed to be completely submerged in gas. I will look into this further, thanks.

just out of curiosity, can you just jump the fuel pump relay with a piece of wire if you dont have a durametric?
