996TT good points bad points

I've owned my TT for a couple of thousand miles and I'm very happy indeed-here's a few good and bad points I have noticed.

Good Points

Amazing traction

Amazing grip

Superb acceleration through all the gears-saw 1*8mph the other day and it was still pulling like a train.

Stable at very high speed (unbelievably easy to cruise at 3 figure speeds)

Great looks (despite being 2001 it still looks the nuts)

Traction control has saved my bacon a couple of times-nearly 500 bhp on cold greasy roads with no problem

Ease of use-not only could my Mother drive this car-she could drive it fast.

Bad points

Rattling interior trim

Fuel guage not working below 1/4 full (will be fixed next service)

Rear wing error message (fixed next service)

MPG around 12mpg around town-20+ on long journey

Struggling to think of any other bad points at the moment-anyone else have some good or bad points to add.

In summary if you are thinking of buying one of these-just do it..!

Bad Point: too many evos and WRXs looking for a run at the TT

The creaky interior sounds and awful sounds the doors make when closing - vault-like solidity was such a strong point on the older air-cooled cars. My Infiniti G35 has zero interior creaks and doors slam "klup" instead of the "clink-rattle-knock" sound my 996TT (01) makes. Other than that, a perfect car for me even years later.

Egbert - how is the Milltek exhaust working out? - which one did you get? - our US representative here (Stratmosphere) lists only one, but Milltek's site lists several for 996tt. How is the sound level - still conservative? - is the added sound a welcome addition? - any booming at various RPMs?

Thanks,

Bond

It's a 100 cell cat exhaust-that's all I know I'm afraid-no booming or intusive noise at any revs-it's loud when you floor it but not like a race exhaust.

Put it this way-i can pull away from the house at 6am and I don't think i wake the neighbours up but when i go through a tunnel i put the windows down and floor it and it sounds beautiful.

A friend of mine has a modded WRX and first time we raced off the line he beat me-second time I switched off the traction control and the TT had the advantage even in 1st-into 2nd and it was goodbye.

I'm having a little trouble with my seats. The backs are very narrow. I think the "sport seats" are better. Otherwise,

I've got a creak/clunk in the roof over the bumps going slow, but that's about it (aside from a poor stereo). I've never noticed the gas mileage (I don't think I'll look). It puts such a huge grin on my face everytime I drive it. I'll have to try switching off traction control and getting a Giac stage I.

No rattles in mine but the seat are terrible. I had regular and now have sport seats. Still n0 good. The 997 seats are soo much better.

Well here are my impressions from 2 weeks of owning my 996tt.. Well i dont think its fast enough at stage 2 for me anymore LOL, well coming from my insane M3 i dont feel its as fast or anywhere near as fun as my M3, but that's kind of a bad comparison since the M3 was full built for the track and RWD, high revving compared to AWD, full traction, tremendous torque but much lower revving..

Overall im loving the car but getting bored real fast, hate the loud road noise from tires or w/e it is, creaks and rattles like mentioned and my G35 exactly like Bond said is so damm solid even after beating the ***** off of it modded for 26k miles. Also the 01's stereo i guess non bose is horrible. Cars character, feel and looks are too die for though

after 1 month of driving, 2 things really get to me:

- i have to park under a tree at work; i'm seeing a ton of leaves in the trunk - 3-4 everytime i open it.

- my gas tank is screwy - it's very hard to completely fill up. the gas nozzle always shuts down before the tank is full.

and a 3rd:

- the oil consumption is a bit nuts ~1 quart every 600 miles.

otherwise, i wouldn't trade the car for anything.

- chuck

I had similar problems with the stereo-an amp and speaker upgrade resolved that very nicely-cost me £1,000.

Also re the traction control-I found it was cutting power out quite a lot on a full bore take-off, with it off I got a nice little wheelspin and straight into the power band.

I wouldn't recommend turning it off for any length of time or if you aren't confident with the car.

Seats for me. Even though the sport seats are way better than the standard/ruffled ones I had on my '03, they still don't feel as good as 997 seats. They don't go low enough for me as well.

I have the same gas tank problem: Can't always seem to be able to get it "full". Sometimes if I wait a little then add some more - I can get it "full".

Most of my interior rattles were taken care of. It was a combination of the rear side windows and the seat belt pillrs... Dealer had a fix for both...

I continue to enjoy the car.....but if I could, 3 things I'd change:
1.) Definately a stiffer clutch (& possibly less travel)
2.) Taller 1st gear
3.) More responsive throttle (blips) as w/past non-Egas Pcars
