Thought id drop this in here as I bent my stock rods and blew my headgaskets all at the same time a couple of weeks ago.

I was making 600+whp and 600+ft/lbs from my Proto tuned K16 Billets, Wagner 5.7" EVO2 Coolers with Joe Toth Scoops, injectors, intake pipes and all the rest when my rods and head gaskets gave up.

Motor is being strengthened with Protomotive Conrods and Supertech Headstuds then in moving the fuel filter to the wheel arch hopefully reducing fuel temps, adding a lightweight flywheel and a water/meth kit before some more tuning.

Will post a thread soon including lots of pics of the build.

Sorry about what happened man. Thats awful yeah rods do bend it will happen on a stock motor. Just depends on when it will happen and how bad.

I would not run meth its a band aid and lots could go wrong. I would run e85 its cleaner and better for your car. Yeah its not cheap to convert but you will be happy.

E85 is terrific - IF you can find it. I have no stations near me and since he's in Australia he might not either...

thanks guys all good the IMS bearing were shot anyway so one way or another the motor would of been getting pulled and stripped.

Only one e85 station about 80kms from my place so wont be going down that route Keith.

meth should be sufficent for now maybe a28s or k24 billets in the near future.

Sorry to hear about what happened to your motor. Have you thought about what caused it? Seems like detonation if you blew the gasket as well as the rods. Were you watching the boost levels for overboost? Bad gas? Was it cold outside? I suspect that the stock internal wastgates on the K24s with compressor upgrades have a tough time keeping the boost down in cold weather when you are trying to keep it to 1.2bar or so. They just don't have the flow and spike at times.

Boost about 0.8bar on the dash IMO what caused it was high load from low rpm i was going up a hill when i put my foot down a little to overtake some trucks I was doing 140kph in 6th gear at the time. That plus the stock rods were at there upper limits anyhow with the power I was making. Not cold mate I live in Australia where it never gets very cold. No signs of detonation only signs of a leaking head gasket.

ill post a thread this week including pics and notes from those that know what the pics mean.

Interesting. You said a leaky head gasket? What signs did you see?

Thats what blew the rods.

Seems like detonation though, why would bent rods blow the HG?

FYI boost gauge on the dash is not very accurate and I would'nt trust it without tapping an actual vac source for a REAL boost gauge. The in dash one is ECU referenced.

Sounds like detonation is what caused the motor to let go.

Tim while your motor is apart you should go through your heads. If you are having them ported then great. If not you should take the valves out and smooth out the casting flash and fix some of the valve seat to aluminum transitions with some sanding rolls. It is easy to do and will get you good gains as some of the flash and transitions on mine were pretty bad. Get a valve job at a normal shop that is used to working on import cars, no need for a specific Porsche shop, the valves are the same as any other car.

Likely the other way around. Coolant gets in the cylinders from bad head gasket and hydrolock bending rods.

That would be a terrible leak from a HG to lock the motor up. The car would've been blowing white smoke prior for sure.
