A cheap option which I may do this year because the numeric is a bit to much with all the rest of my upgrades, it's to heavily mod the stock one. There is a few video showing how to shim the stock shift and use some of the eBay short soft parts to complete get to if the wobble. Also I'm going to use high strength epoxy to fill up some of the voids in the plastic to have it stiffer and more rigid. Just an idea for you.
People will generally recommend the most expensive shifter to you which may not necessarily be the best choice out there, often a justification for their purchase. Sort of like guys recommending mono ball upper mounts and solid transmission mounts to a guy doing battle at cars and coffee. I've tried them all and personally use the Cup shifter/ Cup cables / Cup selector lever. I think it's the best shifter combo available but for your particular use I would not recommend it. Instead I would simply install the OEM 997SSK. I tracked my car heavily for several years with the 997SSK and stock cables without any issues. I had zero complaints. It's an excellent proven product with direct short throws and one that has been used by countless people with total satisfaction. The TT gearbox has a 30% longer selector lever than the GT2/3 gearbox so the 997SSK essentially brings the shift throws in line with the GT gearbox. The 997SSK will not damage synchros as long as you are not trying to speed shift the gearbox but that goes for any shifter. It's an excellent plug and play product and comes with a centering tool making instalation a snap. If you don't necessarily want a SSK, the 997.2GT3 shifter in another fantastic choice with slightly more metal in the key areas and slightly longer throws but still shorter than the OEM 996TT shifter. Unless you are racing/tracking your car, I would look no further than the 997SSK however...Good luck...

Good to know. It will definitely be on the list.
numerics can be had for under 600$ if you are patient and hunt the ads. even numeric runs 600$ specials on a regular basis. 996 ssk is junk. had it and had a 997 ssk. marginally better.
add the price of a cup shifter and cup selector lever and im guessing your at the same price level. the nice thing about the numeric is the ability to adjust the throw of the lever to suit your desire. i tried all 3. highest is like stock throw. middle is perfect. lowest is super short throw but can be hard to shift in regular traffic. its just my .02 but i find the numeric to be one of the best mods i have done and the missed 2-3 is virtually a thing of the past .
something else to consider is customer service. dan is on par with somebody like sam by design. a simple fone call and any issue i ever had was resolved. i ended up with 2 numerics for a short time and the spare needed a few parts to make it like new. called dan and had them in 2 days at a fair price. when the wobble issue was brought up on the forum i called dan about it even though i didnt have any issues. he shipped me the new bearings at no charge and ebven covered the postage.

I've had one of the B&M type short shifters, was awful. I moved to Numeric and it bolted right in, felt great and silent but not cheap. Was told my cables were toast and had Numeric cables installed - loud as hell! I suspect an isolator is missing it's so loud but haven't investigated - lug the engine at all and it rings. Had to have it adjusted too and you can't use the OEM adjustment tool, they really need to build something IMO.
For a budget I'd use one of the OEM style 997 SSK and the bearing inserts to remove slop. Can't recall the name but there's a company making press in bearings that I think makes sense. I'd say the Numeric is one of the best shifters but you pay for it and you can do a more budget oriented upgrade that will get you most of the way there for less.

+1, and the Cup/GT2/3 shifter setup is worlds better then the TT setup...similar cars but completely different
Recently did a 997 upgrade to a 996 and owner was very happy with the result...

99% of 996TT's aren't involved in Motorsport...if it's a street toy and not pushing for absolute performance results...
Not being a smart ***, but what do you mean "drive normaly" ? I sometimes push my car to the best of my ability. And I know that it is only half of what it was built for. Yes... the 996 has it's pitfalls and definitely needs it's upgrades. This is not a track car and I don't beat the **** out of it. Heck.... I only drive it a couple times a year. My wife thinks its such a waste. I've owned this car since new and its time to upgrade some things to make it more enjoyable and start driving it more often.
Numeric racing shifter is the best, but I still found the 2-3 shift lagging. Being a cable trans it will never feel great, but engine/trans mounts (semi solid) have made the shifting feel like a rifle bolt. Very precise, the best mod for shifting I've done for sure.
I want to thank you all for the replies. This forum is awesome ! All great information and gave me alot to think about. I think I possibly I need to find a couple local guys with different set ups and get a closer look see. Its really not about the $$ for me, its more about what will be best for my use. This shouldn't be that hard... but im that kind of guy. I have 3 cars currently under modification and the P car sitting there dormant and lonely in need of love and attention.
Thanks again
Thanks again
