Best Turbo for Road Courses
SubscribeThis might have been covered somewhere but I'm unable to find it anywhere. Just curious if there is a general consensus as to what the best turbo for the track is? I know it will all depend on the particular size layout. I have Billet K16's and there is a member wanting to trade his K24/20's.
Some/many could argue the more power, the better. However, if you are building a fast 996TT for track, the critical thing is not at all whether the car has K16 billets or K24/20s, or just stock K16s. First the focus should be on tires, suspension setup, aerodynamics, weight, drivetrain and brakes...and somewhere in the list also driver development. Good luck!
Both posts above are good points.
But to answer your question, i believe a mid sized k24 or similar based turbo is best. Better top end and considering your rev range should be 4-5k and up on track, there wont be much if any difference in lag.
This is based on years of data from stock k24 at 530 whp vs hybrid k16 at 568 whp. It takes roughly that much more hp on the smaller turbo to match the lesser powered k24 on tracks. K16's with big torque curves are nearly undriveable on tight courses with low grip levels. You lose boost and momentum now being in the lag band.

The tq of the k16 billet I feel is kind of scary and unpredictable if you're truly trying to go fast on the track. 2nd gear and a ton of quick tq at apex makes it ummm exciting and I haven't even taken mine to the track, this is all just from being on the street.
my local track is very tight/technical 'infield' with 2 long straights, haven't felt any need to stray from the stock k24's, nice power level for track use and still responsive if you drive it correctly
Biggest thing on track is heat control. if you are catless a k16 bases turbo with clipped turbine wheel is fine if running cats I'd suggest a k24 based turbo. small to medium size compressor is all you really need. tuning is huge though. tuning to actual slow spool might be needed so you have consistent building power coming on throttle. spool to fast you can get in trouble coming out of a corner real quick.
20gs are way to big for road coarse... stick to what you have...
