New Suspension Q

Hey all,

New owner of an '01 Turbo. The car has 55k miles and is on the stock suspension.

And boy is this suspension stiff. I've owned a lot of sports cars and this thing is about to rattle my teeth out!

I'd like to accomplish two things with a new suspension:

1.) Much, much softer. I don't really plan on tracking the car. It's a nice day / weekend driver and the roads in Cincinnati are garbage.

2.) Lowered ride height.

Recommendations? Go...

I think the stock suspension is the softest, if you don't like it you probably wont like anything else. Are you on 19 inch rims?

Maybe some of the coilovers that have dual rates might do it, maybe the H and R street coilovers. That will be the best you can do. The newer Porsches have smoother riding suspension over the 996, it's gonna be a bit of a bumpy riding car with older tech.

Thanks, Rob. Was just reading about the B8 + H&R combo.

Also found the H&R street coilover set. Any experience with that?

I THINK I have been in a 6tt with H&R street coilover setup a year or so ago but can't confirm, if it was that kit it rides similar to stock GT2 but perhaps a bit softer.
The H&R spring + stock damper combo is very smooth and nice and low, not a track setup by any means but still works well/competent on the street.

jcn,

I just put a nice Bilstein PSS-9 fully adjustable coil over suspension up for sale tonight at a good price in the classifieds. These suspensions can be made to ride pretty soft, too soft for me or rock hard, if all the way to stiff. You may want to consider this...I feel it's a perfect street/sport suspension and it allows adjustable ride height.

I had a PSS10 setup that was nice and soft if you turned it down and the ride height looked great too. At full stiff, it was fine for the track too.

I had factory bilsteins and H&R springs and went to the Ohlins DFV with the dampening/rebound set dead in the middle and the ride is noticeably more compliant and smoother than stock, all while reducing roll and making it feel more planted. Like the car is legitimately comfortable to ride in now, compared to it crashing around on bumps before. (I'm on 19's as well). It could be even softer if you wanted it as well. They are about 3500.00 so frankly it's a bargain for that level of dampening.

Awesome - sounds very appealing. Appreciate the feedback! Hope to make some progress this week (order parts).

I just bought a bit older h&r coilover set, will I need the toe arm to make the alignment right?
