Oil leak - Rear Diff/transmission?

I noticed a few drops of oil on the garage floor this morning. Seems like it is coming from the rear differential. Anyone had this issue? I imagine some sort of seal or gasket. Just wondering how much that will set me back ?

I peaked under there and tried taking a pic.

hard to tell from that pic but could it be your rms? thats 8 hours of labor just to get at a 40$ gasket and when the leak is "visible" and actually leaving drops? it's "time".

Suggestion, can it be the drain plug? It got a sealing ring, check the torque! 22 ftlb....

Oh man, I didn't even think about that; so used to having the engine in the front. You are probably right; the oil looked very clean too, which could make sense since the engine oil probably only has a thousand miles on it.

Probably $1k to get 'er done. Not the end of the world I guess.

Not impossible but I think that is further back and not square in the middle between the rear wheels. I'll double check though.

nah, more of a nuisance than anything however.. porsche actually "rates" the "severity" of an rms leak ( 1-2-3 etc ) and once its visible AND dripping! thats a 3.5 and ya.. better get in there. i waited until i did trans drop ( or clutch ) etc, since its right there. bummer to drop the trans just for an rms though. again, GL w it

just realized! it could be as simple as the drain plug not completely tight, and i was gonna ask if you recently changed oil.. its the one you can reach right at the back of the car w a socket.. check it, maybe you'll get lucky! pls update if you dodged a bullet!

I'll check the drain plug either way but seems highly unlikely. The leak is right in the middle between the rear wheels and slightly to the front of the rear wheels. Oil drain plug as on the side behind the rear wheels if you look at the pic below (for reference, not my car):

Anything else I should get done while I'm at it? Clutch is still fine, so that's out.

jp beat me to it! i didnt see that..ya again B, this happened to me once and i freaked when i came around the side of the car and saw a puddle of fresh oil

was just the drain plug loose. lets hope that's all it is.

edit.. oh man, thats right where the rms would be leaking from ( or close ).. you've never seen a minor "seep" prior to this? i knew about mine for at least a year! if not longer. i just kept a watchful eye on it but it was just "moist" ( at first ) and then progressively worse over time.. and a bad seal surely never gets better on its own !

nah, nothing else to do ( that occurs to me ?) if its just a quick(?!) drop to r&r the seal and even if the clutch is good.. but it will give ya a chance to inspect all the bits if nothing else!

jp is the master with the red pic marker thing ( i cant do it lol ) so i cant "point" but you of course realize there are two drain plugs...? (just making sure..) pretty sure its the "crank" fill plug

I don't recall seeing any oil before and the car is always parked in the same spot. Seems like it must've started on my last drive.

And you're right, the crankcase drain plug would be in the middle but behind the rear wheels. My leak would be at the very bottom of the pic above (probably just outside of the photo).

Here is a better pic showing the puddle on the floor. Seems to come straight out of the seam, so I think RMS is the correct answer. I also checked both drain plugs; all good there.

Another suggestion just to be sure of the location of the leak before you remove the transmission, did you look at the slave, the hydraulic lines and the accumulator. If you look at this picture it can run down to the same position of your leak....

true enough, but if he couldn't tell the difference btw pentosin and motor oil on the ground, he really has no business looking at it at all lol.. except to make the determination it needs to go to a shop
