Addl maintenance while engine is out?

What other work/maintenance have you guys done to your car while the engine was out? Just in case I do the coolant lines. Clutch seems the obvious one but I won't need a clutch for a very long time, so that's out.

Anything else that comes to mind? I was thinking fresh coil packs and spark plugs. I have 74k on the clock; stock motor ('02 996TT).

These are the things that minimum should be addressed while you have easy access.

Spark plugs
Coils
Pin or weld coolant fittings
Coolant reservoir
Slave conversion

what is the reason for dropping the motor?

What is the slave conversion about? The clutch slave cylinder was replaced at 60k mi, so probably good there.

How common is a water pump failure?

Common wear part. They start to leak and the pump fins can break off in some cases.

wise to do the coolant lines. still not sure that i'd just drop the motor preventatively ( this at 143k miles w fingers crossed lol ) but if i did, i'd replace anything i couldn't reach that was an external part, that hadn't heretofore already been replaced, that wasn't a maintenance item. which btw isn't much. as you surely know, you can get to most all maint serviceable items and all manner of stuff on jack stands. if you do it hillbilly style.

unless i was steve, and had the skill AND time on my hands to drop it for tuesday fun

Yea, the coolant lines may be totally fine; it's just always in the back of my head. Now that my daughter enjoys sitting in the back, it'd be nice to take a few longer trips without worry.

Sounds like the major cooling system parts, all rubber hoses/lines and coils/plugs should be a good start and won't break the bank too badly.
