Setting my cams, right this time!

As many of you know I set my cams wrong last year and spent all year driving my car slow. It ran fine but would overboost when getting on it. We have the dial indicators and know that the specs are 110/110 according to sources. The confusion has to do with where you are supposed to set the slop in the variocam. We set it to one side (can't remember if we did forward or back). That was wrong it appears. I have my car torn down and will be borrowing the Stomski dial indicators this weekend. My plan is to use pictures of the 9661 tools to double check my work. I have roughly figured the angles in MS paint which should let me know if I messed up by looking at the slots in the cams in relation to the slots in the plate keys. I will post my progress this weekend.

I've found one of my cylinders has a leaky valve. I'm going to have to to pull it apart so this is to be continued...

Sucks after all that hard work. Valve not seating? Hope not bent from having timing off? Sounds like cams were just 180 out?

if they were 180 out the car would run like crap.

variocam adjuster must be placed on the LEFT hand stop

I'm guessing a valve got bent when we were messing around with the cams. There was a learning curve there. I figured it out by spinning the crank with a wrench, it didn't pop over with compression like the other cylinders. I just have to pull the head and not the cylinders so it won't be bad, just need to get the parts. I could have it back together fairly quickly as long as I have all the parts.

Apparently it is supposed to be set so that it can move forward by being set on the left hand stop. When you do the timing plates you set it on the right hand stop but with a different position based on the slots in the plates. That is the source of the incorrect advise that I got.

Yes but it assumes you have the plates.

plates got cheaper now a days, buy them and avoid the headache. I think maybe 1200-1500 for them. I know its not super cheap but you are spending a lot of time on this.

I was strongly considering getting them but I decided that comparing the results of the dial timing with the angles on the plates as pictured above would work to double check it.
