Well it's probably is a personal choice that would be depend on what type of traffic conditions you would most likely be driving under. I have 6 speed stick and absolutely love it for fast, spirited driving and instantaneous control. On the other hand, stop and go traffic during rush hour is (almost) bad enough to make you want to take the wife's SUV!
Agree, it is a personal choice. Unless you are in competition and believe you can shift faster and more efficiently, it really comes down to how you want to experience your car. I had tiptronic on my first Boxster (really, so my wife could also drive it) and found it lacking. I had a six speed on my Boxster S and found it much more suited to my driving (and my wife never drove my first Boxster). I have a six speed on my TT Cab and can't imagine driving this car with tiptronic.
But, take a look at the performance of the 997 turbo with tiptronic; this may indicate that performance does not suffer and may in fact improve.
I am about to sell my TT cab and it looks like I will be moving to a paddle manual/automatic. This appears to be a true sequential manual transmission, but without the clutch pedal.

you'll making excuses FOR tippies the whole time you own the car when someone finds out
"nice turbo... oh.. automatic... (polite silence)..."

Both cars are very good but different. The six speed is more involved but has proven to be no quicker in my experience and there are several people complaining about clutches and transmission problems. Don't think I have ever heard of a busted tip. It is nice being able to shift it manually though. Even though the shift is not as quick as an SMG or something it still allows you to contrll revs. If I am around 3000 in second gear my car pulls very hard and transitions back to full power shifting to third and really moves well for an auto. It does take some getting used to the manual shifting with the buttons but works well once familiarized. The car also handles and drives extremely well on the track even in auto mode. You have to through it around a few laps to wake it up but it really learns the game quickly.
Tips have the advantage of brake torquing and retaining full boost under shift. Pretty close in the staight. For me there is noting sweeter than a blip downshift in a stick.
tip...
03 tip here...there are a lot of days I wish I had the stick, and then there are the heavy traffic days I love the auto (live in LA). I find the auto is out of the proper rev in very tight canyon driving unfortunately. Most other circumstances it's great. I found the TT tip to be soo sluggish off the line I went for the GIAC and need to get back in for filter/exhaust to spice the car up. Not a prob for the new 997TT tip, but I hope it is more involving than the 996. Simply making the tip work more like BMW's steptronic (not the horrible SMG) would be an upgrade, ie use the shifter for +/- vs just the wheel buttons.
Overall, works fine. Drive them both though.
