Cold Start

Does anyone know of a tuner that will turn the cold start function off for a reasonable charge? I have a 3" Speedtech exhaust on my car and (100 cell cats and no mufflers). I love the sound, but at cold start it's terrible.

I have Speedtech 2.5, are you referring to the loud popping, and crackling on cold start? I usually leave my garage closed for the first 30 seconds, during the nosiest part, then open garage.

My 2003 996 Turbo (stock) was a bit noisy at cold start and what I did was just right after start slip the gear box in reverse and back the car out of the car port and drive away. While I generally prefer to let a cold engine warm up some at idle given the car's proximity to other residences I decided to forego the warm up.

It is even worse now with my Hellcat. That thing sets off car alarms a block over. But I do the same thing. Slip the (auto) into reverse which drops the cold idle way down and quiets the engine/exhaust considerably and just ease the car out and get on down the road.

JSBear,

Yes, but I'm sure it's even worse with the 3".

I'm trying to hurry out of the garage as quickly as possible, with as little throttle as possible. I also park in a deck for work, so it's obnoxious when I leave work. My preference it to turn it off.

You could try Markski or Sambo (if you want to get a Cobb). Those would be your best bets.

Try turning your car on without your ac turned on.
Its a bit quieter if you do that, not by a huge amount but see how you like it.

I believe I already asked Sambo and he doesn't do it. Plus, buying a Cobb tuner is a lot of money just to turn off cold start.

Later, Steve

Did he say why? Not being able to have cold-start delete on a catless car is pretty lame.

I believe he is running 100 cell cats. My car is louder when I remove the cats, I run 200 cell with my Speedtech. If I left for work early in the morning (like 6 or 7am), I would be hesitant to take the turbo, my car is not my DD.

Yes, I run 100 cell cats and my car is not my daily driver.

The cold start is a bit involved.

The intake valve low lift feature is switched on. The engine is fueled richer than even the cold start requires to provide excess fuel which is burned in the exhaust. The excess fuel may be injected with a 2nd injector pulse which is timed to ensure the fuel is carried out the exhaust to avoid the risk of washing the oil from the cold cylinders. At any rate with my stock Turbo I could hear the backfires from the exhaust.

I just found as soon as I had let the engine run just long enough to believe it would be ok -- which really took just a few seconds -- to shift into reverse and back the car out of the carport and drive off kept the racket to a minimum.

I love that short period after the first start of the day when the turbo is so raw and eager. I wish it sounded like that all the time!
