Camshaft CEL

Had my engine rebuilt by Sean West @ Silly Rabbit Motorsport with a whole 3.8 setup and he installed a full ProEFI system. I can't run this in CA due to OBDII requirements. Now that I'm back on the OEM ecu, I'm consistently seeing the following:

What is causing this and can it be fixed without pulling the engine again? Just trying to find out how much of a headache this is turning out to be. With this CEL, I cant smog the car. If I clear the codes, I have to run a drive cycle to set the smog monitors and I pretty much repop the CEL again so I'm stuck.

Your timing could be set incorrectly causing your codes. The the timing has a tolerance range and yours appears to be out of range. I know this because I set my timing incorrectly and had the same problem. It is an easy mistake to make. You need a Durametric reading that can tell you exactly how far advances or delayed your cams are. Re timing the cams will require your engine to be removed and cam covers off unfortunately.

Read somewhere that this could just be a sensor issue. I read about a 997 with about the same mileage as mine that had these codes and they did a sensor change first. I'm hoping this is the problem but I do have a Durametric reader so I could pull the values with that or the Cobb reader.

I've been able to keep the code from popping if I don't push the car hard but you know, it's going to happen more and I don't want to risk ruining something internal.

Thx for the info.

You're probably very close on the timing so it should run fine but you will never pass emissions. If your sensor is bad you get a different code. Do post up what you get from your durametric it is under actual values while idling and it will be one of the cam options that will give you a degree number plus or minus.

s65e90 is infamous around these parts
Check cam sensors on the valve covers. If bad they will show the variocam out of sync.
