Sent to referee to smog check
two things now are nearly imperative to pass with a modded 996 turbo in CA now.
that you use the same smog place ( if possible ) so you have at least a familiarity with them, even though they aren't going to "remember" you necessarily. they will have your car VIN in their system as a previous customer that "passed". this will also help ensure that all is OK BEFORE they hook up to sacramanto with the computer. once that happens any bad news is "logged". make sure all you readiness monitors are "set" to ok. only one not needing to be "green" is the "evap". also dont clear codes within 100 miles of testing. that will also register. smogging a modded car is now as difficult as renewing your written CA drivers test. at least we get 2 or 3 chances at that!
"we" used to joke that CA was a "captured" state. it's no joke any longer.

I'm not sure how Cali does it, but my car is insured by Grundy Worldwide Collector Car Ins. and I NEVER have to do an emissions test in Arizona because it's collector car insured. I have no limits on mileage either. It's great ins. too. My 300ZXTT is also Grundy insured and someone wrecked me. I had a check for full repair costs in 2 days. Police report was not even written yet. I did not pay a penny. Cost is better than any ins. I have had too. Give them a look. It's the only way I can get my cars registered.
(f) As used in this section, a vehicle is of historic interest if it is collected, restored, maintained, and operated by a collector or hobbyist principally for purposes of exhibition and historic vehicle club activities.
Cali law seems to be the same. Get Grundy.

I just found out the state took away Star certifications from many previously certified shops and placed more requirements on testing cars prior to my2000 like some kind of nitrogen injection test for your fuel system. I’ll find out tomorrow as I go 10 miles farther out of my way to have my 1993 Lexus SC 400 smogged. Good grief the CO2 emissions on that car are way below state requirements. I would certainly get out of here if I could!
good luck. i have to deal with this every year on one of two "older" hopped up cars. i have the better part of a year to remedy an intermittent and harmless obd code in the p-car that i KNOW will fail me next year.
it's as if the whole world has gone mad, but CA went mad first. nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

Got my notice that this years registration will require I get smogged. Guess the car is moving to Montana. Good news is that since its more than 10 years old I will never have to pay another registration fee again. This was the last of my cars with CA plates.
We also have CARB to thank for $3.50 a gallon gas when everyone else in the country is paying $1.xx. The pointless drain on the economy is unconscionable.
You can insure ANY 911 with Grundy and then no need for smog testing. Call the DOT to verify. I had a 1987 Carrera with over 150K miles insured. My 300ZXTT has 142K on the odometer, even though my car is like 95% upgraded inside and out, it is covered as a collector car. It's cheap insurance. If my 996 Turbo is a total loss, my confirmed payoff from Grundy is $70,500 with no deductible at all and I have 500K liability as well. I asked for 60K coverage and they say the value increased about every year or 2, so your coverage actually goes up with age. You can drive it unlimited mileage, but won't be covered if you get it stolen from a Walmart parking lot. It also covers hotel and transportation home if it has an accident at a car event. Covers so much. Take a look. Mine goes through Philadelphia indemnity insurance company in cooperation with Grundy worldwide. 2 cars insured and only costs around $600 for both combined, every 6 months. Hard to beat that and I can legally drive my modded cars in Arizona. Cali has the same clause as I posted above.

I got told by my guy too, that my black silicone hoses should have failed me on the visual.
5. Are collector cars exempt from the Smog Check Program?
It depends. All vehicles, model years 1975 and older, are exempt from Smog Check. Collector cars, model years 1976 and newer, are subject to the program, but eligible for an abbreviated inspection. [Health and Safety Code §44011(c) and §44012(f)]Does anyone know what an "abbreviated inspection" entails?
