Need More Power
Need More Power

I was recently interviewed by a writer for an article that will appear in a car magazine in a couple of months. Upon hearing the constant evolution of my car, the writer commented that whatever list of mods he set forth in the article would likely be obsolete by the time the article was published. How right he was!!!!!
What started out two weeks ago as a relatively simple project to reinforce and strengthen my engine and transmission has, not surprisingly, evolved into a considerably more ambitious undertaking. Anyone who has ever remodeled a house understands the following justification/rationalization: âGiven that we are doing xxxx, we might as well do yyyyyâ . . .. . which likewise justifies doing zzzz, aaaa and bbbb.
Now, in addition to EVOMSâ forged piston kit, sport exhaust camshafts, and high pressure head gasket, I am: (1) enlarging the intake and exhaust valve ports (in conjunction with porting and polishing the heads); (2) installing larger Ferrea custom made Nimonic valves (Nickel-Chromium alloy â good to 2600 degrees); (3) installing custom made Beryllium Copper valve seats; and (4) installing custom made valve guides (intake guides: manganese bronze with high copper content to suck the heat out of the valves â exhaust guides: manganese bronze aluminum) (the OEM guides are shot). The head work is being down by McKenzie Cylinder Heads in Oxnard, CA (many thanks to VRAlex and Markski for the referral).
EVOMS has been doing extensive flow testing of intercooler end tanks over the past few weeks and they have determined an optimal design to minimize restrictions and maximize airflow. They will be designing and custom making intercooler end tanks for my new Bell 4.5 inch intercooler cores that employ the design parameters established by the flow test results, thereby yielding optimal air flow.
The transmission is going to be reinforced/strengthened by RENNTech in Florida (the Porsche Tiptronic is made by Mercedes Benz and RENNTech has experience reinforcing these transmissions). RENNTech will also be installing the Quaife LSD.
I had always presumed that I could not increase the rpms/rev limiter beyond the 6800 OEM redline because, I surmised, the Tiptronic computer has built in shift points that force the transmission to shift regardless of any rev limiter setting in the ECU. Given that no one stateside has reprogrammed the Tiptronic computer, I assumed that I was stuck with the OEM redline. It now appears that there may be a solution to my dilemma and Tiptronic owners may be able to increase the rev limiter/redline just like 6speed drivers, with the corresponding benefits. If it works, I will bump my rev limiter to 7500 rpms. More to follow on this evolving modification.
After everything is back together, EVOMS will fine tune my ECU to maximize power within safe AFRs. EVOMS is also powder-coating my wheels (the black paint was constantly scratching) and installing PS2s (in place of my MPSCs).

On the serious side ............. if you want to keep the heat out (this is good for about a 600 degree reduction) have HPS coat your combustion chambers, exhaust ports and valves. Here are some pics.

Well all I can say is: IM SORRY THAT THERE IS NO CURE FOR OUR CONDITION (aka 'The need, the need for speed')!!!! CONGRATS ON YOUR DECISION...I am happy that I could help with McKenzie. He is THE MAN when it comes to maximum port velocity...you will not be dissapointed!!
After all this is done, and you 'fly' around for a couple of months, I will start talking to you about one finall mod...............N O S !! (Sharkey, I told you he had this coming)...
Congratulations!

Cant wait to hear the kill stories after all this work is done Craig. When I was browsing the TT forum today I was wondering if you had received your car back, well now I know the answer haha.
