Thinking about some mods for my '03 TT...

PSS9, clutch, bailey DV's, short shifter, GAIC stage II, headers, EVO 100 cell cats and exhaust.
Pretty routine stuff I guess, but I'm wondering about the effect on emissions, specifically smog test, with the 100 cell cats - anything issues ?

BTW my engine was replaced at 7500 miles because of a porus casting, the new engine has about 7500 miles on it and was 'Made in Spain' it has a 996-xx-xxx part number and looks all nice and shiny - no cosomoline :-)

I read on this forum that this engine has some minor enhancements, like extra webbing etc. Does anyone know what differences are and if there're any benefits (drawbacks)? There seems to be some confusion over the strength / thickness of the casting. I'd be wary of mods if it turns out the "Made in Spain" casting is somehow weaker.

Thanks Tim

I cannot answer your questions. But, if you are worried about smog testing, I would say stick with stock cats. If emissions is not a problem for you (like it's not with me), why not strait pipes?
I am not as familiar with the 996TT scene to know if this is an option. But it is on many other cars. Test pipes have done wonders for me.

Tim don't worry about the "Made in Spain" case.. I remember GT3 guys freaking out when they saw that... The webbing etc... it's actually designed to be slightly stronger (all the Turbo S' came that way too) and all the mods we've done to those cars have been rock solid just like before. We'll see if they last even better

Don't worry about 100cell cats. We smogged a GT640 and GT700 car and both passed with flying colors so you're golden!

i run 100cel cats with streight pipes and after about 30K miles the cats gave out but I still use them... they are the least restrictive.... so when i had to do a sniff test.. i changed the exhaust back to stock for a day...

Yea FVD has full straight pipes from turbo's out replacing cats and muffler and fabspeed has muffler bypass pipes that hook onto the cats. Since i have no cats im just adding the muffler bypass pipes, should sound nuts and give me a good amount of quicker turbo spool and better throttle response along with the evo v flow.

cool thing about awd cars no load on the smog tests heheh also alot of the tech dont really know what a stock turbo engine looks like.. so passing visual shoould be a breeze..

if the power on your car is mid to high rpm u should be fine on the rollers coz no load will be done on the car...

fjk143 is infamous around these parts
I ran straight pipes off the turbos for about a month. The headaches from the drone killed me.

fvds ecu is coded to turn off the 02 sensors.... I know casue I had 2 programs form them. so when u go to the emissions and f they do a diagnostic test via the port.... it will pick up the problem.
the best thing is to put on a stock exhaust once every 2 years for emissions and thats it.

Well im not worried about that, interesting though even with no CEL it would pick it up lol!

I just might do exhaust cutout's with an electronic valve, open it for a sick sound and max power, and close for quiet stock like exhaust

Ok, the wheels are in motion...

I'm on the diving board about to launch....
After visiting a couple of local shops (MoM and AGA), I've decided on AGA for the first wave of mods.
They will be fitting PSS9's, DV's, EVO exhaust / 100 cell cats and GAIC flash.
The clutch is being replaced under warranty tomorrow by the local dealer with another stock unit. The original had a sticky pressure plate.
So I figure I'll run with the brand new stock clutch and see how it goes on - if it expires - oh well....
Interestingly the dealer claimed the stock clutch will hande a stage 2 chip and that uprated units merely increase peddle firmness - mmmmm

Decided to pass on the short shifter for now as the other half drives the TT from time to time and didn't want to suprise her with too much change at once ;-)

As for the future, who knows...

Tim,

The Spanish case is stronger. I have both cases and have machined both cases. If you look at the older cases some of the mains are not really supported all that well. With the Spanish case these mains are supported/reinforced/tied in to the casing walls much better.

If 986host.com wasn't having troubles hosting pics to 6speed right now I could show you some actual pics of the case differences ....... from the inside of the case.
