Bentdoor is infamous around these parts
Locked/welded center diff?

I have a '93 TT and I drive it exclusively in the winter time, and yes, it's an incredible amount of fun. It hooks up great, but I would really like to get a working front drive/assist. This is a fairly high mileage car and I am pretty convinced the center transfer diff is toast.

If you run the same size tires front to back, would locking or welding the center diff give any advantage or would the lack of slip between the front and rear damage the handling?

Yah you would push like crazy through turns. The viscous coupler only supplies power to the front when the rears are slipping. This is the 996 forum but I think the 993 has a similar setup. It's possible your coupler is dead or you aren't noticing the limited traction it does provide. Replace your coupler or front diff if it isn't working.
