Is changing oil annually truly necessary if only driving 1,000 miles?
I hope you guys don't mind if I post this here even though I have a Bentley since this is about engine oil and is a more active forum. I drive my Bentley Bentayga W12 only about 1,000 to 2,000 miles per year. I use LIQUI MOLY oil (0W-40), which is arguably the best there is. I’ve never really understood the annual time requirement but always abided by it. But with how few miles I drive this car, is it truly necessary? Why? Does oil go bad after sitting for one year? I've always wondered if guys with huge 100+ car collections truly change the oil on every single one ever year given how few miles each one of them turn annually.
Biggest issue is condensation. Water is heavier than oil and will drain out first if your oil is sitting for a while undisturbed. Crack your 4 drain plugs without starting your motor and drain an oz or so out of each, that will get the water out. I see that frequently with motorcycles doing services. 50 year tech here. My $.02
Draining an ounce of oil is an interesting idea. Perhaps driving the car for half an hour is an easier way to get rid of the moisture?
I suggest sending a sample of your oil for a used oil analysis. The report can help you decide if the oil change interval can be extended.
An oil change service usually includes a safety inspection. Please keep an eye on fluid levels/leaks, tire conditions, etc, if you extend the oil change intervals to multiple years.

My old Cayenne Turbo manual said to change oil every 2 years!!!
It's still running and going strong. I imagine your 996 Turbo holds the same amount if not more oil.

No, oil does not "go bad" sitting for a year or even far longer.
I actually have a little evidence on this. In the 2 years from Dec 2020 to Dec 2022 I only put a little over 2k miles on my 996 Turbo. I send a sample in to Blackstone labs to be analyzed after every oil change on my cars and they had only good things to say about my oil and the oil experts at Blackstone say there is no issue with going multiple years without changing oil when accumulated milage is low.
