aren't the engines or something different in the '01 versus the latter models? I thought there was some kind of engine change or something...

Yes big time!!
beginning in 02: they changed the dash to include a glove box, auto dimming mirrors and rain sensors standard, Bose made standard, hollow spoke wheels (on early 01s they were solid spoke)....Many more differences in options too but I cant remember all. Do a search as this has been discussed before.
In 03 main differeence is new MOST (digital optical system) PCM II introduced alomg with new CD changer to match and loads of new options.
If your budget allows definitely get an 02 or later

Except for the X50 option, an 01 up to 04 ar all basically the same car, the changes arent major, nothing as far as performance goes.

Who needs sound performance when you have a Fabspeed Loud fitted on the car. You can't hear anything but the wonderful flat 6 screaming behind you .

Boston 7777:

Good luck with the search. I hope you find a car of your preference.
