Ack! My bad. I forgot to check the brand on the box on the way out the door. This link shows one place where you can buy the same basic product, and shows a pic. I just don't know for sure if it is the same brand Fabspeed sent me. (It is $15-$25 cheaper though, per unit, and you need two. So, I'd buy from these guys.)

After driving the car more, I can now say that my ears/head don't hurt from the resonance. Let's say the stock exhaust eliminates 95% of the resonance (I can still hear it even with the stock system, it's just mostly muted), and Fabspeed Sport eliminates say 10% of the resonance, then the Sport w/cones eliminates about 80% of it. There is still some resonance from about 2K - 2.3K rpm. But it is much quieter, doesn't hurt the ears. And the resonace that used to be present from 2.3 to say 2.7K is gone. So, you could cruise at 2.5K and and not get a headache.

I'm seriously thinking about putting another set of cones just before the muffler. Will talk to Todd about the idea. But, the basic idea is to slow th exhaust down as it enters the muffler, and delay it as it leaves the muffler. We've already delayed the exit by putting the cone in just after the muffler. So, I'd need one more set of cones, at $60 each this time.

As for DIY instructions.

1. remove muffler (leave cats in place) while trying not to burn the crap out of yourself
2. remove the section of pipe from the muffler to the tips
3. clean the area of tubing that goes inside the muffler in preparation for tack welding
4. take the 3" cone (smallest one they make) and cut it down to fit the 2.5" exhaust pipe. You can, for ex., insert it into the muffler and use a marker to show where to cut.
5. after cutting, insert the cone into the muffler (the side where the exhaust exits), tip first, and tack weld in place.
6. reassemble muffler

It takes about an hour for a guy that knows what he is doing with welding, cutting, etc. That's why I had Al at EVO do the welding and cutting. It would have taken me a day, 100s of dollars in new tools, and several sets of cones as I mangled the first few.

Good stuff Donn!! How can we find out how much this will hinder performance and increase backpressyre (this is important since the reason I got this exhaust in the first place was the great gain in HP/TQ...)?
Also, can you still double check on the box that the cones came in??
TIA

As soon as Todd has his dyno back up, I'll dyno the car. Seat of the pants there's no noticeable difference. It's not like going to the modified stock system (without the bypass) that Stephen says cuts 40 HP. My guess is that its less than 10. And 10 HP on an otherwise 600+ car isn't much to worry about. The day I worry about 10 HP out of 600+ is the day I seek one on one race coaching.

I'll double check the box when I get home tonight. It's sitting in the garage, not the car (as I originally thought).

Did you check out the link? The link shows the same basic product, if not the exact same brand.

Mansour,

Checked out the box. The cones are made by Vortex. The site I posted sells the same cone for $59.95, vs. the $85 I was charged by Fabspeed. So, if you're game, looks like this is the place to get them.

Racer63 -- did you ever out the second set of cones in AND are you happy with the Fabspeed now?

I bought his Fabspeed and I love it. It still has some resonance from 2500-3000 rpm but I don't mind.

Under PSI, how "loud is it?" My Fabspeed undergoes the knife this week. I can't hear myself think in the car when I drive and I really need to tone it dowsn. Resonance is not the problem its the volume that is killing me.

Deeroff,

If it is the volume that is the issue, I think you'd find the Fabspeed Quiet with the cones quiet enough. But, there is still that resonance that bothers some people. It's a funny thing. My Europipe Loud is louder than the Fabspeed Quiet, but with no resonance to speak of. So, it works really well for me.

UnderPSI bought my Fabspeed Quiet with the cones and it works great for him.

I think it boils down to a matter of personal preference and maybe even the characteristics of your own hearing. What may be physically uncomfortable for some (resonance in a certain range) may not be for others. So, unfortunately, all you can do is experiment, or find others with different exhaust systems that you can listen to before you buy.

Racer63 -- Good assessment. Of course, I could be confusing resonance with loudness (I get no buzzy vibration, humming or droning, but it is that I cannot really hear anything but the exhaust - once that is gone I may just hear the resonance yet!)

Msindi, I have the sport (supposed to be quiet, no?)

BTW, I ran open headers on my 1970 Boss 429 and ......
