Tire review: Kumho Ecsta SPT
Tire review: Kumho Ecsta SPT
Well, the lease is almost up, and I didn't want to shell out for PS2's when I'm turning the car in in a few months, so I saw these Kumhos at TireRack in OEM sizes, with the proper load and speed ratings, so I thought "Why not?".
I'll tell you why not. They're bloody awful. The grip level is so much lower than the PS2's it's not even funny. Case in point. 25 degrees in winter on my PS2's, with my tiny little 320HP NA 996 is enough to get s slight flickering of the PSM light on the 1-2 upshift. Yesterday, 75 degrees in spring, and the same behavior with the Kumhos resulted in full PSM activation, with that whole lurching throttle-body-closing intervention. I've never had that happen, with the PS2's or even the OEM PZero's.
Braking power is really diminished, and I've had a couple of close calls
on quiet country roads where the car just wouldn't slow down as I expected. As for cornering, the thing just slithers all over the road like I'm driving on a dirt road.
I have no confidence in these tires and it's really impaired my enjoyment of the car.
Other than that, the other metrics of tire performance (road noise, ride quality) are about average, neither great nor terrible. I haven't driven in the rain yet (I'm a little scared about that, to be honest), and I've got about 500 miles on them, so I can't comment on wear.
Overall, I'd recommend against them, unless you use your car for commuting only, in which case, why are you reading this forum at all?
They are cheap, though...

I'm certainly NOT disputing your own Experience with these tires....
but I just emailed Damon@tirerack (member here on 6speed) a week ago,
and he said quite the opposite, that the tires were pretty good and that they were selling very well too.
Of course my application is only 125hp!

I bought the kumho's for racing over the michelin's pilots, and they were aweful. five laps at the track was all it took. Wasted my whole weekend, not to mention a lot of cash. If you want performance, there is nothing better than michelins.
