Brake light troubles?

OK, this one is odd. Guy pulls up next to me yesterday and says, "Your brake lights aren't working" So, next stop I have my friend get out and stand behind the car. Start pumping the brakes....On....off....on....off.....Nothing. After 5 or 6 times they start coming on.......seemed like the more I pumped them, the more consistantly they worked......Ok drove to my next stop. Tried it again.....same thing.......

Anyone else had this happen? Something sticking or gummed up? Bad microswitch or something? If I had to guess....I would guess something like that....but I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction or I will have to take it in......and I would like to AVOID taking it in for this.....

Chris

Don't know if its the same, but I had a similar issue with my brakes. I'd step on them and it'd just flick on and off real quick, even when I had it depressed. Brought it into the dealer. They said there's a little sensor or switch down by the brake pedal that sometimes becomes damaged. Don't know if that's your answer, but you might want to check it out. I know of nothing more than that.

Yup, sounds like the brake light switch on the pedal is acting up on you. It is very easy to replace, you just turn the switch 90 degrees and pull out. It has a plunger on it that tends to stick over time.

Hey Doc, where exactly is this switch? I got down it the footwell and am feeling up the back of the pedal but I can't seem to find it....can you give me a description?

Thanks

Chris

Is it adjustable? I've had to adjust the brake or clutch switch on several (non-Porsche) cars.

Well, I don't have any pictures handy, but it is literally right near the brake pedal stalk. You will need a good light and to crawl under the dash on your back to see it, but it is plain as day.

It is not adjustable to my knowledge, and is cheap enough, you might as well just replace it rather than trying to mess with it just so it can die again in the future.
