Turbo Gurus: Turbo Viability in Cayman S?

Hi guys, I am a cayman S owner and love the car. I could be totally happy with the performance of the car, but the modaholic in me will not let me leave it alone.

I am looking into options for adding power to the car, and have experience with superchargers in my past bmws (328, m3).

However, I am thinking its time to play with a turbo setup in the car, and have heard of several companies developing these kits for caymans.

My question to you is does the mid engine layout make keeping everything cool more difficult due to its positioning? The only air flow for the car is for the intakes, as their is no inlet for having a flow of air to cool the area around the turbos~ Or is this theory slightly overexaggerated?

Thanks for any input you have on this.

I think it would be very hard if not imposable to make an intercooler for that car. I suppose you might be able to do it in the front of the car but then you would lose all of your efficiency

Can you mount an IC in the rear bumper like the TT has. Of course you would have to fab the vents out on each side. Nothing that a true professional like yourself can't handle.

The problem with having the intercoolers in the rear like the TT is the way that the exhaust is routed. The cats will sit right back there in there little holes. IIRC.

AHH you caught me slipping I forgot about those. Time for Stephen to reinvent the wheel and re-route the exhaust. Mine is still there practice on it

I would get a tuned up N/A 3.8l engine with like 380-400hp for the Cayman. Should be crazy

And remember to add LSD!

Evo did a turbo back in the day for the 3.4/3.6L NA 911's but Todd basically said because of all the custom fabbing/piping it was ridiculously expensive, like $30K-$40K and wasn't economically viable. So they did the SC system instead. I think the SC system is much more viable for this application. Not to mention it would probably give you over 100-125 hp gain. Plenty good enough for most people.

I'm in the Kaizu camp! You'll have a simpler, more immediately
satisfying, and reliable solution with a bigger motor and Torsen
LSD.

the cheapest and easiest option would be probably be to use EVO's 3.4 supercharger kit. i'm not sure what would be involved with the install, but it should be fairly straightforward and a lot less expensive than a full motor swap. the liquid intercooler mounts in the engine compartment and a 3rd radiator mounts in the front bumper to cool the intercooler. as long as the ECU is the same as the 996 3.4 and there is room for the blower and intercooler in the engine compartment, it should be very straightforward other than some custom brackets.

No room up top like the Boxster. They may be able to do a kit like I am having done on my 3.2 at IA in the future.

what does the engine bay look like on a 3.4 cayman? is the engine positioned the same as a 996?

on my car, the blower doesn't use any additional space outside the normal dimensions of the engine. it just kind of fits in the naturally existing open areas on the motor but doesn't stick out any futher.

hmmmmmm I think you could do a turbo option with larger head gaskets to lower the compression. also you could do a water IC instead of air to air IC. the problem with turbo is the ECU programing!! additionally i think you would want larger radiators to offset the slight increase in temp.... this would be an interesting plan.... there is a twin turbo kit for the boxsters... hmmm it was in Excellence magazine about a year ago I believe???? they used water IC.... good luck hmmmm you can buy a used turbo motor for 19 K and sell your new caymen motor to a boxster 2.5!!!!!!!!!!!
