Very true, he is also still AWD though. I would imagine that would be even more strain, BUT going RWD is putting all of the stress on the non GT2 diff, who knows. Goodluck!

Your Tech is right and wrong. The Viscous Coupling is what diverts torque to the front and the rear. It's not the one between the 2 rear wheels. It works kind of like a torque converter. Here is how it works.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential9.htm

With that said, if the front is disconected, the fluid is always trying to transfer 40% (it's variable of 5% to 40% max) of the torque to the front diff that's not there. At the same time, the output shaft will catch up to the rear really quickly as there is no resistance to go the other way. So, yes, it will be working harder as every time there is output shaft speed change, the coupling will be working. But it's job is also a lot easier as there is no rotating weight and road force to deal with. I doubt it will burn it up.

To our luck, the Porsche Engineer has put this viscous clutch (part #6) in the front with the front axle. So it's an none issue as it will be removed by this conversion also.

Yep! Your tech is wrong and is the live example of the new generation of techs which know how to change parts but don't know why they're replacing them in the first place let alone knowing how their work. This one of the reasons why car manufacturers are calling the engines and gearboxes back to factory to rebuild them.

P.S. There are other issues with 2WD but the VC is not one them and there are fellow 6speeders with over 800bhp Turbos running 2WD.

BTW, I was recently reading that Porsche has programmed the 997TT to cut power to the front wheels during braking for more stability. I'm sure the 996TT benefits in this regard with the AWD disengaged.

The 996TT's viscous cenmter diffrential sends 5% of the torque to the front wheels. Disconnecting the front driveshaft frees up that 5%, removes a lot of rotating mass from the overall drivetrain and gives the car better steering feel.

If you are OK with the extra 125 to 150 punds of front end weight all you need to do is disconnect the front driveshaft. Talk about reversible...
ArI: I think you're a little confused here. When you are braking, there is no power going to the front wheels (your foot is on the brake, not the gas) so there is "no power to cut".
