Speeding Ticket Question/ Poll

With everyone here driving fast cars, I was wondering about the collective number of speeding tickets. I am sure all of us have broken the speed limit, but the question is how many of us got caught and how many times.

I got nailed by a CHP radar today. Sad thing is I was only clocked at 53mph on a non-residential road with posted limit of 40mph.
The cop was parked, facing the same direction as my travel, less than 1/10th of a mile ( 528 ft) from the stop sign as I accelerated from zero mph. I saw him when I was about 1/2 way to his car, hit the brakes but too late. Even if I assume 0-60 mph time of 4.0 seconds at constant rate of acceleration ( 22 ft/sec squared), I would have spent just a hair over 1 second going between 40 and 53 mph. I was no where near full acceration so I figure I was in violation of the speed law for less than 1 second. Talk about bad luck.

Ironically, I filled out an application for foundation 1199 with my lifetime membership check of $1800 and it's sitting in my out-going mailbox right now. I told the officer that I just mailed in my payment to 1199. He thanked me for supporting the California Highway Patrol, gave me a ticket anyway and said " I sincerely hope that you continue to support foundation 1199"
I guess I still won't pull it from my out-going mail. What do you guys think ?

Hire a good traffic lawyer. I have one on retainer here in LA, and he travels to Northern CA as well. He is awesome!

We had a 20 Porsche drive from San Jose to SF via 280 and made a stop at the Father Sierra rest stop to pick up other cars coming from other directions. A CHP officer came over to check us out. One of our guys had just joined after getting some tickets. He had the license plate frame and the card they give you. He showed it to the officer and the officer did not know what it was.

PM if you need a traffic attorney in the San Jose area. Jeff

The way to significantly lower tickets is to buy the best radar detector out there and use it everytime you drive. I try not to go too fast on intersates because the highway patrol guys are professional speed enforcers. Even with a good detector you will get nailed eventually. In town (where I live at least) is a different story. The cops park, turn on the radar, and wait for someone to drive through. They will never catch anyone with a decent detector but they dont seem to care!

I've never owned a radar detector before but I guess it's time to get one. What do you recommend ? Is there an advantage to get one hard-wired in ? Is it legal to have one in California ?

Anybody have success stories of avoiding a ticket because of membership in foundation 11-99 ? I don't expect a break for major violations but the implication ( license plate frame, little card with CHP logo to carry with your license to show to CHP officer) is that minor infractions will be overlooked.

I may still support 11-99 because it is a good cause but I will hold off mailing my check for now since I am kind of pissed off about the whole thing.

golfnut,
i happen to like the Valentine One but others will say that Escort products are as good or even better for less money. I dont want to start another 8500 vs V-1 debate. I have both of these detectors any either of them will significantly lower your chance of getting a ticket especially by local police that do speed enforcement occasionally rather than as a primary duty like highway patrol.
I dont know how much the 11-99 foundation will help. Some guys have had good luck with it. I do know that minor infractions are rare in a 911. Most times Iam well over the limit so that might lessen the effectiveness of a 11-99 donation.
It is legal to use a detector in CA.

Dabum is an unknown quantity at this point
Definatly get the best Radar detector you can find. I live in Canada and they use Laser but it can still be detected. Its saved me many times from the parked cops sitting around the city, but like in the states the highway patrol guys are harder to get a reading on.

I got suckered into paying for a full membership.

When I got pulled over the CHP gave me a ticket for no front plate. He did not get a good reading on my speed since I slowed down when I - meaning the radar - saw him.

My wife got pulled over and was not given a ticket.

The lesson is: 11-99 Foundation works for females
