Stand Alone

I want to put on GT28 turbos on my porsche. I have have a set sitting in my house and they are the best turbos i think when trying to produce about 700 to 800 hp on an AWD car. My problem is tunning...Does anyone know anyone in LA that does tunning and what EMS do they recommend. I was told to go with a Motec unit but i really dont want to spend 10k on EMS especially since i can rebuilt the motor with all titanium for that price...THANKS YALL

Why not just buy a package like our 700 or 800 kit? Program is done, nothing left to buy, no welding, no fabbing, just bolt and go!

You will spend more than 10K for a Motec. I install standalones all day long. 10K would not be close installed.

Not to butt in on Stephen... But I know of shops in that area that are very good at tuning AEM EMS. PM me for info.

AEM is not bad. We were working with them at one point on building a harness. The problem is there was no way to retain some of the variable controls on the valve train and PSM etc. Motec and Autronix etc have enough versatility to control those as GPO and carry the frequency ability to run them as well. AEM may have something new so I don't know. We were setup to tune all of the throw back Hemis built here in the Midwest and were using AEM P&P. The other issue believe it or not was the factory plug. Porsche has the right to those, so no one can touch them.

reason

the reason being is because honestly I want a different set up then everyone else... I think that the GT28 turbo's will create much less lag and will continue to have great power through out the band. And i know the motec is more than 10k i was just saying... AEM isnt to bad but honestly i wouldnt even run my Skyline with it... Does anyone have any knowledge on the HKS EMS..I use that on the GTR and that thing rocks. Also when ordering the Kit what does it do for EMS...is it just a re-mapped ECU or is a full stand alone?

Our kits use Garretts. The difference is we CNC the housings to accept them so everything becomes a direct bolt on. No welding no fuss. My car makes Max TQ 744 at the wheels at 3800RPM and Max HP about 5300. It carries through the redline. Doesn't get more drivable than that. But you would not have a standalone.

I haven't used the HKS EMS.

The ECU receives a full remapping that still has all factory functions and adaptation in place. We can overlay almost all of the kits.

Stephen, I've never heard of anybody tuning a Motec for a 996TT, keeping ABS/PSM and having the car run well. I and a now-defunct tuning shop tried to do this in 2002, and the Gemballa 750 that ran Motec ran like crap most of the time AFAIK. We also developed giant intercoolers when eveybody said OEMs were good enough. I then sold my '02 Turbo and was out of the loop for awhile.

A few conversations with Todd back in '02 and early '03 convinced me that the best approach is to simply control the parameters in the existing computer, as y'all (and other top tuners) are already doing.

That is because someone didn't know how to tune that Motec on the G car. I know of at least three cases of it being done. One by my good friend. They went Motec as the engine was shoved in an early chassis. It is being tracked, the other two are on street cars. One was tuned 3 years ago by another freind in the biz. They called me when they bent a rod on the engine dyno. I laughed...um yea, change the rods!

I do agree from a cost standpoint and lack of headache kits like what I have on my car are the best way. If there was a reason to go to Motec on my TT I would and I have no issue tuning it and would have done it by now. Not a big deal really, nor is the ABS switch over. The PSM can be deleted, but TC can be used with the Motec and still use DBW. All of which TC will control. Again, it comes down to how much time and money. I have done similar setups in the past.

Now, my 87 is a different story. It is getting an SM4.

I am informed that there is at least one 996TT owner that claims to be running a stock ECU, when he is actually running Motec.
