TIRE pressure with Michelin Sport cup on a 996TT
TIRE pressure with Michelin Sport cup on a 996TT
I just came back from Tremblant, QC for the PCA event (Track) and I had a problem with my tire pressure...
Normally, porsche said to put 36 front and 44 back for daily driving.
But on the track, nobody said the same thing..
some said 40/40 on hot tire, others said 36/40 hot, others said 36/44 hot !!!
What is the good pressure for my tire
Anybody know???

I was running 35/40 cold today and it seemed just fine. Others have said to run that hot...so like 32/36 or so cold. You really need to look at the tires after a few laps and see how they look on the sides. Oh yeah and get 'em HOT!

Pilot Sport Cup tires generally provide their best performance when running somewhat lower tire pressures than other brands of DOT-legal competition tires. The guidelines presented below are for relatively light vehicles; heavier vehicles will require additional inflation pressure.
General Guidelines for inflation pressure are as follows:
Road Use: Vehicle's placard pressures.
Road Racing/Drivers Schools/Track Events: Typically 25-28 psi cold rising to a target of 32-36 psi hot.
Thank you for the link!!
Now... on a 996TT, should I put 26/27 psi front and rear, or should I put more on rear tires, like 26 front and 32 back??
to reach 32/36 psi hot front and 38/42 psi hot rear ?

First the TT is not a "light" car so you should put more in than those recommendations. Second, yes the rears should have more pressure...typically 3-5 lbs. more. I still think you should actually look at the tires after a few laps and see how they are wearing and how they are riding and adjust appropriately. Those values published are guidelined usually based on averages and therefore do not take into account the specific track conditions, environmental conditions, driver, type of driving, etc. Just my HO.
guys these tires above 34-36PSI are really slippery. I do not recommend going much more than 26F(cold) and 29R(cold). MPSCs do not like being above 34-35PSI. If you are running them this high you are losing out on performance, I guarentee it. Try somewhere between 25-26 in front cold and 28-29 cold out back. Anyone who believes these tires should be around 40+hot are def not using the correct pressures and are very misinformed. trust me on this one.

Thank you very much for the advice. I'm not a track guy and I went this week and wasn't all that impressed, but I definately had the wrong pressure...I'll give your recommendations a try next time!
