Pros and cons of GT640 or GT700, input wanted.
My '01 tt currently has a chip and exhaust. Next year I would like to upgrade to at least the GT640 package. I would like to hear from those of you who have this upgrade, or the GT700, in terms of any problems you are experiencing since the upgrade. Of course, I would like to know the positives as well. I'm concerned about engine durability, but would like to keep my upgrade to externals only.
I do not plan on tracking the car, but you never know. I simply want the most out of the engine without compromising reliability and every day drivability. Please let me know how long you've had your upgrade. Thanks in advance.

hey i dont have either the 600 or gt700 but know a few people that do... If your only doing external modifications its not worth doing either...just upgrade the turbo's and wastegates and then from there do the chip, exhaust, dv, and intake if u wish... cause to my knowledge over the 600hp marker u start to bend rods and so fourth...
I know a while back there was a thread on a total rebuilt and it had like 600+ on stock internals and when they tore down the motor some of the rods were twisted.... There were pictures and all.. I think MIGHT BE WRONG it was Craigs car....
The fact is this... Porsche motors arent really High HP motors unless you want to drop about as much cash on the motor as you did on the car... and thats to do it right so u can drive it every day and have fun with out being scared of breaking something

Hey Me qwkr, did you at least stay at a Holiday Inn last night?
Just kidding bro. I believe the mods you recommend are pretty close to the GT 640 upgrade minus the fuel regulator and headers. Thanks for your input.

I've had a GT700 kit on my 996TT since January, and have had no problems, other than clutch slippage beacause of too much power (thanks to EVOMS for the new ceramic, non-slip clutch) I ran with stock internals on the dragstrip and road course and have had zero problems. I always run race fuel which is much better for the motor, as there will be no detonation. The GT700 is in my opinion the best kit out there, it lets you keep your stock internals and has almost no lag, with a super fast spool. You wouldn't even know that the car is modded until you get in the throttle. The fuel milage is abysmal though.
Here's a vid of my 700 in action:

Depending upon the mileage you expect from your motor I'd obviously say the 700 is the best kit EVO has. It's a clear 10 second car and not only is the spool up great but it has good top end (134mph trap speeds) as well. The GT640 is a great kit, don't get me wrong (we've done about 18?), but it's been "surpassed". The 640 kit was created over three years ago before EVO had developed a fuel system to support those turbos (which are the same in both kits). The 640 is a good kit for those that want to keep the car in a "bolt-on" only state though.
Thanks for the feedback Joe, awesome video. Will put the GT2 intercoolers to good use.
Alex test driving vehicles with both kits sounds good to me. I know I'll like the power they offer, my concern primarily has to do with issues and long term reliability. I wonder if anyone has a turbo with 800+ hp that I can test drive, especially a black one!

I transitioned from Evo's Stage 4gtkit to GT640 to GT 700. Bottom line was that the GT700 is the optimized evolution of all the kits. The 640 kit was provided a significant power increase over the Stage 4GT kit but seemed to hesitate occasionally on WOT. I think this was from a fuel flow issue. The GT700's larger injectors and new fuel pump wtih associated ecu programming addressed this issue in spades. As many will attest, the GT700 is rock solid and the way I would go if I were to upgrade another turbo car. Actually, I'd probably go bit further with a 750 or 800kit w/ upgraded internals if money was not a problem.
I had both kits (GT640 and GT700) and there is a noticable difference in power between the two.The GT700 was on my car for over a year and about 3500 miles including both some hard and regular driving. The car never missed a beat and I never even had a cel.Joe is correct in that you wouldn't know the car was modified(UNTIL I PUT STRAIGHT PIPES ON) unless you smashed the gas.I had many musclecars mistakenly think I was their lunch only to find out (very quickly) they were being served!!The best part about it is it is a bolt on kit with zero lag that you don't have to mess with and will make the power as advertised. While some of the GT700'S on this forum don't all run in the 10's they all do make the same power as evidenced by their trap speeds all being around 134-136mph.My engine has recently been dismantled and all was ok.No bent rods or burnt valves. This is not to say this couldn't happen because the connecting rods are the weak link in the motor and when you go to the track with sticky tires and the car bites at launch you further stress these components. This is also true about running close to the redline for extended periods around a roadcourse.I would recommend doing the internals just for the piece of mind because it is a expensive motor to replace if you throw a rod. This is why I am doing the internals.Well that's BS, it's really to add more power!!
Do the GT700 you won't be sorry.

One thing with the EVO kits is that you can do a 640 first and then upgrade and get full credit to jump to the 700 anyways. A lot of people do that.Same with my car... Anytime you like

That pass was a classic Nova-domestic with no top end....It was one crazy pass. I was so bummed I couldn't finish. I didn't even launch that well but I think after this weekend you can burn those tires in for me and run some 10s and then send them back and I'll _try_ and do a bit better and actually finish the 1/4 heh.

I'm planning another Drag day for November, we're going to have some heavy hitters for sure, you gotta come out!!
