Turbo S/ X50, does this sound right??

In another forum I can across this info from what seems to be a pretty knowledgeable guy...

"444bhp from 414bhp on non-S
457lb/ft from 413lb/ft on non-S
350mm ceramic brakes from 330mm steel brakes on non-S

They reworked the 3.6l engine significantly to get these gains, it isn't just a boost bar job. As a result the spread of tq is more even giving immediate in-gear push.
official 0-62 is 4.2 and top speed 191mph but they test quicker.
However, no match in a straightline for a Renntech SL600 ramped up to 675hp."

To which I asked, "how did they rework the engine?"

His response...

"They used larger compressors and turbines and enhanced the intercoolers. They also empolyed advanced cross-flow water cooling (developed for F1) which allocates a seperate circuit for each cylinder and head to help with engine cooling. Tq is an almost flat max line from 3000-5000rpm on the S/X50 variant of the engine."

Just wondering because Ive never heard of this "enhanced cooling". I would think the torque curve is similar in shape in the x50 cars just higher torque #'s and at higher rpms, ie 3500-5500 vs 3000 to 5000 for k-16's.

That sounds right on the money. I think the Turbo S had more boost and larger intercoolers and the GT2 has larger turbos and modified intercoolers. Both have modified ECU programming.

I was under the impression that the Turbo S, X50 and GT2's have the same turbos and intercoolers...

Or perhaps I'm just smoking some GREAT ish...

Yes, but what about this...
"They also empolyed advanced cross-flow water cooling (developed for F1) which allocates a seperate circuit for each cylinder and head to help with engine cooling"

I guess I dont consider bigger turbos and intercoolers "reworking the engine"

I think there are a few more differences than that but as far as the power plant goes, yes.

Would those "differences" really be significant??

Suspension and its geometry are totally different as well.

This was posted earlier. I think this a comparison between a Gt2 and a standard turbo.
  • 2.7 psi more boost (from 11.8 psi to 14.5)
  • larger intercoolers
  • mufflers with less backpressure
  • 6-speed transaxle w/steel synchros (vs. brass) for durability; limited-slip w/40-percent locking under acceleration, 60-percent under braking; external cooler
  • firmer springs and shocks
  • larger anti-roll bars (front diameter increases from 0.95 in. to 1.05 in.); rear bar is smaller (0.81 in. vs. 0.87 in.) but is 4-position adjustable
  • metal bushings replace rubber in suspension links; uniball camber plates for upper strut pivots
  • adjustable ride height with threaded spring perches
  • wider wheels (8 1/2 & 12-in. widths f & r vs. 8 & 11)
  • bigger tires (235/40ZR-18 & 315/30ZR-18 vs. 225/40ZR-18 & 295/30ZR-18)
  • manually adjustable rear wing (1–6 degrees)
Weight savings:
  • deletion of driveshaft, viscous coupling, front differential, front halfshafts, four CV joints (est 150 lb)
  • spare tire deletion (29.0 lb)
  • ceramic-composite brake discs replace cast-iron units (36.6 lb)
  • rear seat deletion (17.6 lb)
  • misc.-power sunroof delete, cooling fan delete for third center-mounted radiator
Other points of interest:
Intake air enters through hollow uprights of rear spoiler; ride height is 0.78 in. lower than Turbo's; vent in front of hood reduces front-end lift, improves cooling; underbody panels reduce lift and direct air toward transaxle; ceramic-composite brakes have spiral internal vents that increase surface area for better cooling.

ride height is only 0.78 inch lower? I thought it was much more than that...

rwm to answer your question..........the GT2 and S or X-50 is the same engine. it is the upgraded stock engine reprogramed with K-24 turbos and finned intercooler. It does run higher boost to 0.9. 9elevens post lists the further difference between the S/X-50 and the GT2.

Im not wondering the differences between the gt2 and x50, the thread is questioning the difference between the engines of the regular 996tt and the x50/ turbo S cars. A guy from mbworld claimed that the x-50 cars had a "reworked engine". I think what your is saying Tom K that they are the same engine, so what this guy from MBworld came up with is straight out of his a$$. Right?
