Do You Have a Sentinel on Guard When You Park It?

Sorry to be a newbie with so many questions, but I can't help wondering if you folks with all these tasteful and expensive cosmetic mods have any concerns about parking these beauties and leaving them unattended? I've not heard any discussion about theft.

Hell, years ago, I had a car with real wire wheels; left it in a reataurant parking lot, and returned to find it sitting on its rotors. I've had another nice vehicle stolen in the Atlanta area.

Do you guys use Lo Jack or other tracking methods (only good after they have absconded with it), or just never place the vehicle in a place where there is high potential for theft?

Kinda makes me want to build up a high HP sleeper.

Please enlighten me.

I keep mine where I can see it if I am out. Me and the Kimber watch it real good. I don't wory about it too much in the garage I live in the county and theft is not a problem.

JWC,

I have a "cityfied" location and when I had my '03 911 Cabrio I was paranoid even about such a modest investment as that. I, too, always tried to park it where I could see it from the window of the restaurant, or whatever. Unfortunately, it was pretty much a hangar queen, in aviation terms.

I want my new dream to be something I can enjoy on a daily (assuming fair weather) basis, but by the time you throw a lot at engine, trans and suspension mods, a person like me is not going to be able to digest a theft loss. Are there companies who will insure for stated value, at a reasonable rate? I have been with USAA for over 40 years, and I don't think they do things like that.

Not sure on the insurance issue but it's a very good question. I' m going to call my State Farm agent Monday and ask him. I am sure someone on this site will know.

I face the same problems every time I take the TT out. The car sleeps in the suburbs of Miami in my garage, which I consider to be fairly safe. When I take it into the city, I try to leave it visible, up close and in areas with a lot of pedestrian traffic nearby. I NEVER valet, although I will pull up and leave the car in a valet area and pay a fee ($20 or so) to leave the car where I've left it... and yes, I take my keys with me. Unfortunately, we live a world with thieves and haters. Headlamp theft is rampant is this area. One just has to be as careful as possible with our hard-earned joy rides.

I live in LA and my little beast is my only car at this point, so it goes everywhere. I have insured it for additional value. I also have LoJack. Knock on wood I have never had an issue.

I would think comprehensive insurance would cover any theft on the car. If someone would steal parts, I would just hope they have the decency to not destroy anything to get it off. Most important would be that no one got hurt if someone was stealing parts or the car.
I had an experience with theft.....very minor though.

I just spoke with United Services Automobile Association who is my auto insurance carrier and they A. do not write policies for stated value of the vehicle and B. said they would pay based on their determination of the actual cash value of the vehicle at the time of loss.

I have had many street rods through the years, and have spent money for both cosmetic and performance enhancements. It has been my experience that very few cents on the dollar comes back to me at resale time. I suspect a claims adjuster may take a similar view.

I guess I just fear sinking a lot of after-purchase dollars in mods, only to have some vandal waltz off with my toy. Surely someone on this forum has a horror story or two. I'm all ears.

Thanks

I've never heard of one of these cars being stolen outright.

I've heard of wheels, headlights, and even exhaust tips getting stolen, but never the car itself (except one case in which someone broke into a house, nabbed a key, then stole the car with it).
