Fyi, my RX-7 is a DD & a track car (its not a Porsche exclusivity).

Renn- nobody said you were "dissing" anyone? I'm merely pointing out RX-7s are good track cars & can be utilized as DDs as well. There is an extra caveat with RX-7s though. The owners must modify & tune them as they are not as forgiving as piston powerplants when not getting adequate fuel.

Thats it - no ill will here - just pointing out some rotary facts.

RX-7s are an exception. They have poor mileage (~same as a V8, or worse when modded), but they are pure sports cars .

Matt,

Very true and they don't run forever either! I swear they think apex seals are consumables As for being pure sports cars yeah but so is a mustang Man I can't help it. Nice car BTW.

My brother has built & ported over 1,000 12A & 13B blocks over ~23 yrs as a hobby. The only time they break a seal is when the engine detonates due to a lack of fuel. Rotaries have zero tolerence for detonation (unless you build the engine with ceramic seals,....but even they have a limit - an explosion generating over 13,000 lbs of pressure will break just about anything - including even the best ceramic seal set ).

If you feed the engine adequate fuel via proper/professional tuning when modifying a rotary, they will last 120k+ miles. I sold my modded Turbo II last year with 130k miles on its stock block...no rebuild was necessary yet - although it was getting about the time.

Many people get these cars & mod them without understanding the importance of proper tuning & then blow their motors (and blame the engine design ). Rotaries just are not as forgiving as piston powerplants when it comes to running lean. Inadequate fuel means detonation = $4k parts & labor for a reman & install. Other than that, there is nothing to break (no cams, valves, pistons, etc. They have less than half the moving parts of a traditional 2 valve pushrod V8. Its a simple, yet effective design).

You mentioned a Mustang being a pure sports car. I disagree completely. It carries 4 people, lacks 50/50 balance, lacks an IRS, can't handle like say....a Vette, a 911, or an FD, They are not designed from the ground up to be a track car. The Cobra is as close to a sports car as any Mustang got IMO. Its basicly the same chassis with a bigger engine, brakes, & stiffer suspension - although they did put an IRS on some of the Cobra's like yours. Mustangs are, IMO, a modern day Muscle car that gets "close" to being a sports car, but falls a little short (and I'm a former 5.0L GT owner). We can agree to disagree - its not a big deal.

Thanks for the props on the car. Its just a fun car to drive now & then.

-Matt

Matt a few years ok I almost stole a gen 3 RX7 with a blown engine. The guy who owned it was a bit of a turd. It blew because of tuning. I was just pulling your chain the rx7 is really a amazing platform considering it's age and stiff competition. Enjoy your holiday weekend hope to see you around.

Yup...agreed. If the guy who owned ithat RX-7 you were looing at was a turd - he likely treated his car the same way. If you are ever interested in one, give me a holler & I'll tell you what to avoid so you don't get junk. The cars or OK but there are soooo many other choices out today (a new ZO6 is a good buy or a new 997TT if you want to spend more but getter better build quality.....all depends on your wallet & preference I suppose).

Have a good weekend.
