Stock 996 vs E60 M5

So this this was all a dream about a race that happened in Mexico..

The M5 is a friends fathers car, they are both on that M5Board (The son drives the car at the track because he has the launch down perfect). Here is the car: http://www.dragtimes.com/BMW-M5-Timeslip-10755.html Basically its got no rear cats, an x-pipe, and now it has a cold air (It didn't have it on that pass). He was by himself.

My car of course is bone stock, non x50, to the air filters. Some how my brother was in the car with me so I had a passanger (170lbs) in this dream race.

First race in my dream was from 20mph and I honked it off. I hit it looked over at his car instead of the tach, because I jumped out.. Bam rev limiter.. Got into 2nd and was 2 cars or so back and at 110 he had got to about almost 3 cars out.

Second race is what ended up waking me up from my nap.. We decided to go from a 40 this time and I'd start in 2nd with him honking. We both hit it at the same time and we are door to door.. By 100-110 when we let out his rear bumper was parallel with my front bumper. I know soon as the M5 gets into the high gears it becomes a rocket ship some how so I didn't even want to bother with it. Before I woke up I did try one stop launch with him next to me so he could tell me how he thought it left and it was my first try but he said it looked like it came out like a bat out of hell!

Does that sound right for the cars? I told my buddy of this dream and he said he honestly thinks the car could run a 12.0 or 11.9 if I just get it out of the hole right. Is it possible for one of these cars to do that stock.

Very possible in perfect conditions to run 12.1 with about a 1.7 60' time bone stock. 11.9 is dedicated track guy type E.T. Sounds about right though with the M5. Based on those highway runs if you two were to run at the strip and he pulled you by a car length it would be about 12.3 to his 12.1 which is normal for a stock turbo.

I told him 12.2 if I drove the hell out of it, but he is convinced that it will do 11s. I hope I don't prove him wrong but I'm not expecting anything. On my first launch he said I left harder then their M5 has ever left, but thats seat of the pants. Having traction in 1st is nice

If it runs 12.2's I'll be happy as can be! What kind of mph do stock Turbo's usually run.

There was a cab this weekend running 113 at 3800 lbs with driver, you should be 3600 with driver and that would be 116. I think 111-118 is the norm

I'd say it's time for Stage 2 on up. Given that my driving skills are mediocre, the extra ponies sure help out. Even the new M3 will have 400hp out of the box.

I'm working on it I'd be happy with just a chip/exhaust.

Chip and exhaust and you'll beat the M5 pretty good in the midrange speeds 0-100 but after 120 mph the AWD will be a hinderance and the M5 will keep up. But by that point it you should be well enough ahead to not even think about it.

The best 1/4 mile time I've been able to find for a stock 996TT on K16's is 11.9 @ 116.1 by Motor Trend.

Yeah I remember seeing that and Popular Hotrod went a 12.3 @ 118 but they said they couldn't get the car to actually 60ft.

I'm going to try to get my buddy to put me in the groove so I can launch pretty hard. Has it ever been common for any of the halfshafts to break? I want to try for a 11.9 pass The strip isn't a new thing just gotta get the launch down.

I don't think your stock turbo will run 11's; low to mid 12s is more likely. As far as a highway run goes, I would expect a stock e60 M5 to put 2-3 CLs on a stock non-x50 turbo. I ran an e60 M5 from 35-165 in my X50 and we were dead even upto 150 or so, at which point the X50 started pulling very slightly (< 1CL).

I only lost by a car on our roll race. According to M5Board.com and some other BMW website they have the fastest (Non-cammed) all motor recorded M5 in America. I'd imagine if it was your normal stock M5 the outcome would be a tiny bit different I've had good luck with getting factory freaks considering the fact that 2000 Corvette Hardtop went a 12.8 @ 113mph bonestock to the air filter. Here in Houston we have what seems to be a tid bit of nitrous in the air, and HRP is still rated one of the best tracks in the US (I think it still holds NHRA records).

All in all.. I'll be happy as a can be with a 12.1-12.2 if it runs 11.9-12.0 I'll be bouncing off the walls LOL

Also, how good does the stock clutch works because I'm afraid that I may burn the clutch up coming out on it?

I have one of those M5's (I got it for my wife). It just doesn't feel like a car that does a 12.1, it's fast, but I didn't think it was that fast.

It's a drivers race granted both of you are on street tires and at the drag strip. A highway pull you will lose, from a dig on the street you definitely have a chance, dont let him run DR's that is one mod too many advantage.

The stock clutch should hold up good, just dont drop the clutch too hard, protect your half shafts too. To run and 11 you will have to put them both on the line and not care.
