MAF cleaning/K&N oil air filters?

Questions for the thread:

There seems to be a lot of discussion about problems with the MAF, and the MAF seems to control a lot of functions.

I've read that the oil from a K&N oil air filter will cause the MAF to fail over time. Not sure this is true, but it makes sense.

Would it make sense to clean the MAF from time to time with an electrical contact spray to avoid the problem?

Would cleaning the MAF improve the cars performance?

Jim

Thanks I'll check it out.

I cleaned my MAF today, but haven't tried it out yet.

I clean customer MAF's at maintenance intervals, especially on cars with CAI's. If you have a CAI, next time you clean your filter, only lightly oil the filter.

k&n ruinned my MAF

I had K & N drop in filter. Got a MAF error code, had the MAF cleaned and went back to stock paper filter. Got the same MAF error code again in 1 week, I think it was 1130. My mechanic told me to get a new MAF after 3 error codes in 3 wks.

I'll run stock paper from now on even if I change the intake to the AP duel intake, 2001 996TT.

Question K&N Should not be used then?

Guys, I am soooo confused. I just bought a K&N filter because that is what I used on my other cars with no problems. This is a paper K&N OIL filter HP-7011. It is a drop in filter. Here is a picture of the one I am scheduled to put in on my 996 on March 1. http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=HP-7011
Should I be concerned with this one?

i had mine cleaned today as part of a sh*tload of stuff being done, including cleaning the air filter/plugs/coils etc. and my car runs as well as it ever has. new MAF included. i also run a bmc filter, and while i've had my issues with sluggish running or psm/abs cels/hot film MAF codes, and the like. i'm one of the few(?) ( and i know next to nothing ) that doesn't think the oiled filter is that problematic. after cleaning, just don't SOAK it.

mafs get fried and fouled in these cars, regardless.

We are talking about Air Intake filters, not oil filters

I've had a K&N air filter for 2 years, 50,000 km. I've cleaned and re-oiled it 3 or 4 times with no codes (MAF or otherwise). I don't clean the MAF every time I clean the filter but I do clean it once in a while.

Same here; K&N (60,000km) - no MAF issues.

50K km in 2 years, and I thought I am using my car with 60K km in 3.5 years.
