996tt Drag racing technique

What is the best technique for drag racing a 996tt on street tires?
What rpms to launch at without destroying the clutch?
PSM on or off for a novice?
Any advice on how best to modulate the clutch pedal on launch???
This car seems so hard to launch effectively, either too much power and lots of wheel hop or too little and it bogs down
Also what is the best shifting rpm's to stay in the power band, my k16's seem to die out above 5500rpm's.
I want to do well at the drag day this weekend.

Rob, PSM off. I would experiment with rpms ,but I think most would agree a 2800 or thereabouts launch will be the best, although all cars are different. I tried as low as 2K and as high a 5K...2800-3000 was my sweet spot. If it hops, feather the clutch or get out of the power. Wheel hop breaks axles and is very hard on the driveline. Throw in 4-5 gals of race gas and you should be OK. Again as far as shift points it is different for all cars depending on tune ,but I would shift around 6K..Best of luck and stay out of the water box!!! Keep us updated on the results. Kevin

What about rear tire pressure? Should I lower it a bit?

Rob, if it is your first time out you would be better served to just concentrate on the fundamentals. Yes you can lower the rear ,but if you go too low the car gets squirrely 2/3 of the way down the track... Go out and have fun...dont sweat the details... If you are going with SECC, I am sure there will be plenty of experienced drivers to give some helpful hints...Have fun. Kevin

Rob, BTW...see if you can borrow a Pbox for your runs...that way you can get 0-60,0-100, 0-130, and 60-130 if you keep your foot in it a bit beyond the traps...you should have plenty of road to get to 130 and stop safely. Kevin

It's been a day already (at least in this part of the world), so where are those videos?

I slip the clutch with PSM off at arond 4000rpm. This netted me 1.7 short times on aftermarket 19" wheels with really narrow rubber on them. This was my first time out drag racing a twin, but seemed pretty basic. Just like launching a DSM, except it doesn't hook as well.

Thx for asking KPG. I was a bit embarassed as I was extremely slower than all the other gt700 and 800's. I couldnt get hooked up very well (street tires)and my 60ft times were horrible. My best pass was 12.23 @ 121.19 with a 2.18 60ft. It was fun though and difficult to resist not running 30 or 40 passes.

Heck, if that was the first time out you did great.... The ET will come...That trap is very good for a stg2 kit...I know when I was EVO stg2 the best I could manage was a 12.001 at 119.5 AWD, and belive me it was painful knowing I was 2 thousands from an 11 sec slip...Congrats...and dont worry about the 700s or 800s, there is always someone faster anyway....Kevin

This car seems so hard to launch effectively, either too much power and lots of wheel hop or too little and it bogs down
Also what is the best shifting rpm's to stay in the power band, my k16's seem to die out above 5500rpm's.
I want to do well at the drag day this weekend.
See the separate thread "Drag Racing 101" that I bumped for the good oil.

To answer your questions, launch RPMs on stock tyres with stock 996TT 4750 RPM was my optimum point on a naverage prepped drag strip. On a good strip maybe go for 5000 RPM.

PSM off definately.

Try all different ways to moderate the clutch and see what works.

996TT is hard to launch, do not be afraid to give it.

Shift at redline, be aware that 1-2 shift comes up very quickly so aim to short shift by 250 RPM and you will nail it just on redline.
