Tire Recommendation Track and Road use

Hello I am looking to get a new set of tires for my 03 996 turbo, I plan on doing a few track days this year and I also drive my car in the road mostly on weekends (Dry Weekends) does anyone have some good recommendations for tires?

Michelin Pilot Sport 2's are popular and fair well at the track. Toyo T1R's have a good track rating as well for a street tire. I have heard some favorable opinions about Yokohama Neovas as well.

If you're absolutely sure you'll always be in the dry, and want to
stick the very best on the track, the best barely street legal
tire you can get is the Kumho 710. (almost a slick). One notch
closer to water safety but still very high performance would be
the Yokohama Advan A048. Down one more from that is a true
street tire, the stock tire for Lotus Elites, is the Yokohama
Advan NEOVA AD07. I hear that the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups
are good on tracks but too hard to stick well until they get hot.

I cant speak of any of the other tires, but Joe is correct about the Sport Cups. Great tire ,but does need some heating to get optimal grip. I drive my MPSC 160 miles to and from the track and have driven them in the rain as well. As far as rain use...a little common sense will go a very long way. Kevin

I don't have a turbo, I have a supercharged 996, not as much HP as you guys, but respectable enough.

I ripped through a set of Pirelli P-Zero Corsa's pretty quickly. They were just way too harsh.

I'm now settled on Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. I really like them so far.

+1 on the Advan NEOVA AD07's - Almost an R-compound - very sticky. Only dis is they're loud.

Cups on the track, msp2/p zero on the street. Not really a tire around that will do both really well without some compromise. Sport cups and a x73 suspension on your TT is an unbeatable combo at the track, but driving back home in the rain really sucks.

I've had two sets of MPSC's that corded an inside edge with conservative camber. I'm done with them for a while.

Never had the issue with RA-1's...

YMMV

What size RA-1's do you run? They don't seem to come in stock sizes.

We have run the following

Toyo RA-1's in Speed GTbut we run the take off's from the race program on our street cars- They are shaved and work great .
We also won the eurotuner time attack overall in the unlimited class and the limited class on these tires..

Another nice option is the Michelin Pilot Sport CUP- Also a very good tire.

The RA-1s shaved are faster than the MSP Cups with full tread.
As they should be. I have not run the tires shaved back to back.

On a turbo you can run 245 front and 305 rear RA-1 they are a little taller then they should be but you will experiance NO problems with PASM- ABS or any other. I have run these on turbo's over the past 2 years and have also run this set up on GT3's and our own GT2 with no problem.

We usually have a few sets of good Toyo RA-1 's at the shop and can offer them at susbstantial savings. They have 1 session on them since we install new rubber every session in WCGT.

I can also supply Pilot Sport Cups if anyone needs a set.

Would be happy to help either way..

Thanks for the offer on the RA-1's - will have to give you a ring when these cord - but damn they last a long time. They also get faster and faster. Last lap is their fastest, then throw they away.

I think I am going to go with the Pilot sport cup I've heard many good things about them, I think that if I get hooked on the track I am going to get slicks and get a new set of wheels for road driving.. I am not too worried about wet driving since I dont drive my car on the rain unless it catches me by surprise

Thank you everyone!!

If this is your first time at the track or even your first year (you didn't mention that) please stick with street tires. Your car will give you much more feedback.

When are you *really* overdriving the tires?
Since the spectrum of sound: singing -> howling -> screaming
is so linear, it's hard to judge where you are on the scale, and
the same goes for the breakaway characteristics, something
like: sitck -> slide -> push. But because of this tone differential
I knew when my line deviated just a fraction - the goal - a nice
even fade in, steady screach, even fade out. Very satisfying
when done right.

Streets also have much better breakaway characteristics. With any R-compound and Cups, esp. if they're not absolutely hot, they just snap when they give way.

Please - I know - I didn't listen either - I wanted GRIP, STICK, G's - but ended up going back to street tires for a season, and I learned tons...

Your instructor will also thank you..

I totally agree with Kevin and do the same thing. If the car is not going to be a daily driver the MPSC's are the way to go. They are an amazing tire.
They come speced on the new 997GT3.

At the track they do need 2 laps to heat up to track sticky. Also like negative camber.

The suggestions that Joe made are ones I am going to try myself. Also the Toyo RA-1's non shaved are a good choice.
