brake handle replacement

Anyone done this? Is it easy? What about the shifter? Are these DIY or should I let dealer do it?

If you can take stuff apart and put it back together again using standard hand tools - you can do this yourself. The only hard part is getting the shift **** off the shifter itself - you may have to pull till your nose bleeds to get it off. You expect that you're going to break something or that you'll end up throwing it through the roof of your car when it releases - but it's just a press fit.

Replacing the E-Brake lever is simply taking bolts out and routing the cable properly - you could take pictures once you get the console out - but it shouldn't be necessary...

This is a DIY job...

It's fairly easy... Try to search for DIY guides on renntech.org if you are not comfortable doing it without instructions...

You should be able to remove / install in an hour or so...

Here's a pic just before I changed out both the hand brake & shift/shift ****. Total install took 90 minutes.

you can use a hair dryer, but not completely necessary. When I did it, I stood on the seat on each side with my head sticking out the sunroof pulling up as hard as i could. When it popped loose, I bruised my shoulder on the roof... lol...

when you remove the center console for the ebrake, there is a small short wire going to the light bulb in the ashtray, make sure you don't accidently rip it. after you got the ebrake bolted in, wrap it in some thin towels before you put the center console back on so you don't scratch the leather.

Too bad I am in Tokyo - any chance one of the experts will be here for vacation? :-)

I am wondering how the shops do it - do they also just pull *real* hard?

Duane,

You can't really break the linkage as it has nothing to do with the shift **** itself. I can help you with the install if you want. Shoot me a PM with your number and we'll set something up.
