Buy a 996 TT or install a EVO supercharger

I love my car. I've had it almost 4 years. There aren't as many sporty cars in Colorado as CA, FL,TX, AZ etc. At DE's, autocrosses or just on the road this car turns heads, everyone loves the silver mesh in the bumper and I'd do this to a TT if I bought one . . . but I've decided (no thanks to this forum) it's time for more power. I've test driven a few TT's in Denver and the power is intoxicating. I can't imagine what 5-700 hp would be like.

My car is a Orient Red 2001 C2 with 40,000 miles. This car is my daily driver unless it snows, then a BMW 540i. Three years ago I had a Fabspeed exhaust, headers and an EVO intake installed and then Upsolute reprogrammed the ecu. I'll be going to 5-6 DE's and 3-4 autocrosses this summer and have attended 15-20 in the past, even traveling down to Phoenix to spend a day with RennTechV12 and the amazing cars of SECC.

With EVO's current special, I can buy a supercharger for 8,000 plus around 2,000 for installation. If I'm lucky, I could get 40,000 for my car. I found a 2001 Orient Red TT with 33,000 miles for 61,000. Excellent/new condition inside and out. I think the Orient Red color is stunning and it seems 75% of TT's are different shades of silver. If I got 40,000 for my C2 bought the TT for 57-59,000 my net cost would be 17-19,000 plus tax. So my current C2 with a SC for 10k or a TT for 7-10k more . . . I guess I just answered my own question.

What direction would you guys take. Here are some pictures of my current car. Thanks.

Ken

You will never recover the expense on the SC and will probably be harder to sell the car later. I would go with the TT hands down.

About a week or so ago there was a guy who was in the same situation. If you search you should find the article...

IMHO I would get the TT. The mod potential with the TT is much greater and if you do decide to do it and the resale value with mods will be better. Save yourself the 10K on the Sc kit and use it as a down payment on the TT. If you are going to compare a SC 911 to a turbo 911 I think in the long run you are going to be disapointed. If you want to SC the car just for the sake of more power and not interested in comparing it to a TT then do it. I believe a SC 911 will perform about the same if not better than a stock TT.

unless it's a trade, don't forget to factor in the sales tax cost. which on $60K is going to be a healthy sum.

if you were to get $40K for you car you're looking at:

$20K cost difference
$4k in sales tax (at a guessed rate of 7%) figuring this was not a trade in
$16K in mods and labor (evo stage 4 tuning), which doesn't include anything cosmetic. just enough engine mods to make this car significantly faster than your current car to justify the transition.

so honestly you're looking at around $40K plus wheels, wings, bumpers, short shift, blah blah blah.... plus slightly higher insurance rates. you'd also be going to AWD and that is not everyone's preference.

if i were starting from scratch, TT pcar all the way. if you have something you already like and money is an object, then i would consider the blower. you'll be faster than stock TT's and save some money.

I agree with most above TT all the way. It's just not the same and IMO the car is not designed to put a SC on. The TT comes with an entirely different block and will retain much of the price differential.

oh yeah. the TT's are really doing a great job holding their values. considering these $140K+ cars are already dipping into the 50's retail, i'd have to disagree with you there. the 993TT's are older and kicking the 996TT's asses when it comes to value retention. the TT's are terrible right now in that aspect. i'm not sure if they're done dropping like a rock. maybe they'll stabilize now that they've almost bottomed out.

i guess you're "IMO" differs from RUF. i don't agree with their pricing, but i'd have to say they know a thing or two about porsches. they don't seem to have a problem offering SC kits for both the 996 and the 997.

again, if money wasn't an issue, the TT for sure. how much is the extra 100 or so HP worth to you?

well, i've raced woolyg's protomotive TT (hybrid turbos, clubsport IC's, boost controller, ECU, waste gate springs, diverter valves) on the highway from 50 to some fairly high numbers. it was 4-6 car lengths at best. considering the cost difference, it wasn't as big a loss as I would have anticipated.

not to mention the SC'd cars are capable of 11.7's at 120mph.

i guess you have to ask, is it worth $40K to run an 11.1?
