Who here has taken there turbo to tail of the dragon?
I am planning a trip to tail of the dragon in late May and was wondering how the the turbo would do. Seems that it's weight and low 1st gear may prove frustrating? My mods are in my sig. Thanks for your input.
I am trying to decide my route. I am going down with a small group was thinking leaving Sunday aroun 1pm and get to knoxville around 8pm. Then early monday morning head toward the main event. On the way back I thought about taking rt 555 or going up through nashville and visit the Corvette museum.
Tail of the Dragon.com Go there and get the map for the Cherohalla (sp) Skyway tail of the dragon loop and you wont be dissapointed. The tail is awesome but the way the turbo understeers scares me because there are several off camber turns. The shyway is highspeed almost the whole time and the most beautiful views, however I took my corvette last time so didnt have to deal with understeer. The tails turns are banked so for the most part you should be ok but be careful.
i took a few pics leading up to TOD:

i'm in the minority here, but i wasn't that impressed. it's a fun road, sure, but there are roads that are nearly as fun near the bay area. i also got stuck behind 2 motorcycles w/ 3 ricers behind trying to "race" me. as you point out, the car is not quite geared right for the slow corners.
i enjoyed the road leading up to TOD far more - no traffic, faster corners (by 10-20mph), better views, etc. from my blog above:
f you decide to go, allot an extra 2.5 hours, and take the scenic route - it is stunning. Take I75 south of 321 to 78, drive east to 360, and then continue east on 43. Once you hit 360, you will see a range of picturesque scenery - cow and horse fields, battered barns, rivers, waterfalls, small hills, and pretty forests. Then you start ascending the mountains where there are multiple vantage points.
it's the mountains where the driving gets fun.

FWIW... I hear law enforcement is really cracking down on speeding on the tail of the dragon...

Turbo would suck on the Tail.
When we did the Tail last fall, I was leading a group of three guys bombing the Cherohala (sp?). It's way more suited to the strengths of the TT. Really fun if there's not too much traffic.

yes, when i had free room, it wasn't *that* much fun... too slow, too tight... i'm sure the driver could have been better too

like i said earlier, the road leading *up* to the Tail is the better road for the turbo - and far less traffic to boot.
