Gas Tank = 9.832 Gal? WTF?

Okay, I'd only been able to get 10 or 11 gallons in there before, but this is new. I drove to Target and parked with the needle just a hair under the quarter-tank mark. When I came back out and started the car, I immediately had the "Consider range on remaining fuel", orange light, and I'd never seen the gauge so low. I don't even think it moved when I started the car. OBC said my range was 9 miles.

When I filled it up (luckily I was a few hundred yards from a pump), I couldn't get more than 9.832 gallons in there, despite trying my darndest. I twisted that thing and re-inserted so many times. It just refused to take more than 9.832 G.

So what's the story? Do I have some sort of faulty sensor (why does that not sound like a cheap fix)? I know we said 11-ish gallons isn't uncommon, but that rapid drop followed by <10 gal seems like something is wrong.

The biggest problem with the sensor is its location in the tank...it is not on the bottom (it is above the lower hump). So what happens is it estimates the remaining fuel by considering your current mpg....I'm not sure what happened in your case, but apparently it under estimated your remaining fuel It could be a bad sensor or it needs to be recalibrated?

I've had a similar problem for a while. Basically for me anytime the car would go under 1/4 tank I would rarely be able to get it past 3/4 tank when trying to fill it up. Some gas stations would work (usually Shell would work and Chevron would not). Eventually they found that the fuel regulator was bad and they replaced it, shortly after it was still doing it. So they found some connections that weren't correct. Haven't filled up yet, but will try soon.

So maybe check that the fuel regulator is working correctly.

I've had similar problems, both with my Turbo and G35. I'll be getting it checked out soon.

Just for what it's worth, I found this:
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...=10352&hl=tank
in my quest for more info. I'm not sure it's my problem, though, as the symptoms are slightly different, at least so far (when I filled up, the tank reported 100% full). I'll ask there and see what they say - Renntech is a wonderful resource!

Cheers,
Justin
