Protomotive upgrade nearing completion
It is supposed to be ready this Friday. I'll let you know once I get it back. My tech went to FL on Vacation last week and the week before that he was sick most of the week, so it has taken a little longer than expected...they're on it now.
Update:
We have had a few minor logistical issues that have delayed the motor going back into the car. First problem - I was under the impression that the clutch convesion to the non-assisted set-up was simple bolt on parts and I supplied these parts to my tech with that understanding. When it came time to install it, the GT3 parts did not fit, as the GT3 transmission is a totally different configuration. Further discussions with the clutch conversion parts supplier revealed that a bracket in fact would have to be fabricated to mount the GT3 slave. My tech didn't like this method because it would leave an area open to debris that is normally sealed to prevent contamination. He felt I would have a maintenance issue down the road and would be revisiting this area - adding that that is why Porsche has the area sealed...A second option was using a 993 slave and a few other 993 related parts which mount and seal in the factory location, which we did, but then the fittings on one line did not match to the 996 fittings (996 - 12mm vs. 993 - 14mm), so a custom line had to be fabricated with a 996 fiting on one end and a 993 fitting on the other end, 993 slave ordered, etc. At this point the decision was made that if the 993 parts did not work, we would just go back to the stock power assisted set-up. It turns out the 993 parts all fit for a factory type installation. I believe the transmission case had to be drilled and tapped on the opposite side (it is factory marked for this) to make this set-up work. This burned 3-4 days odering and waiting for parts to arrive.
So with the clutch behind us, we went to raise the engine into the car and the EVO intake pipes did not clear properly. We are working on this today and the motor should be in after a few adjustments to the piping. Oh, and when the motor was raised, we discovered that the secondary fuel pump has to be relocated 1/2" to the side of where we origianally placed it...
So it is very close - finally and with a little luck, I could be driving it tomorrow.

Hi John,
Congrats on your nearly complete upgrade. I sent this to you as a PM and if you wish to answer privately, I understand. However, I realized that others may be able to also advise me. Therefore I am posting the question publicly:
I am contemplating the proto fuel system (injectors, MAF, dual 044 pumps). I spoke w/ Todd, and he quoted me close to 8K. Shipping will cost me 2.2K.
I have a very good tech here who can install the equipment, and then I can have Todd do a mail in ECU programming. Doing so will save me quite a bit of money.
What do you think, since you are doing a similar operation. If you did it again would you just ship the car to Todd although it would cost a lot more money, or would you go the rout you have taken?
Although I would love to send my car to Todd, money is an issue with me and hence I am interested in the way you have done things.

Jean,
I do not know what you are referring to regading the electrical steering mechanism.
Dr,
If I knew I was going to do the fuel when I started this process, I may have sent the car to Todd, but I am not certain. Originally, I was just doing Proto turbos, boost controller, throttle body/y-plenum and Todds programming. Then I threw in the interccolers and was set to go when my tech mentioned "if you are going to do the fuel system, now with the engine out is the time to do it". I thought about it and concluded "why not - it will be better in the end, so I may as well just do it and enjoy the benefits". So here we are...
The fuel system alone was not that difficult. The clutch conversion and the EVO piping have caused the most problems. If you have a good tech, it should be relatively straight forward, especially if all you are doing is the fuel system.

Doc,
I picked up a 100+ hp/tq sending my car to Todd for custom tuning after having run a generic proto ecu. My engine wasn't a standard setup however.
If your engine was modded exactly like another one that had received custom tuning, and you used the same program, a custom tune may not yield much.

Woodster,
Actually no-one that I know of has my exact set up. I believe it was concieved by S-Car-Go and then Todd programs the ECU for them.
Maybe CJV would know.
John,
Thanks for the info.

John,

Todd will be developing a custom program for my car through his affiliate, Protosport in NJ. John at Protosport datalogs the cars variables, emails it to Todd, Todd then emails it back with adjustments and the car is run again. This is done a few times until the program is maximized for the car. I believe S-CAR-GO in CA and Prototech in FL are the only other two affiliates that can offer the same service.

I also told Todd his website needs help. I believe someone has offered to help (a customer I think?). He needs a couple videos of Bobby's 993TT ripping the quarter mile, Markski's car, some pictures of things like Scott's
new cams, and Scott's neighbors heads. To finish it off I do believe a couple
of VR Alex's classic videos would be fun to link to. One of my favorites is
"Protomotive on the Prowl" where VR races the RX7 with the V8 in it and then
races the Procharged Camaro, classic stuff!
John, good luck with your car, sorry for the thread diversion. I hear great things about Protosport, their work is really top notch.

Zippy, Todd probably does do this with individuals that have the proper software and knowledge. Given my lack of both requirements, Todd steered me to Protosport for the tuning, citing their relationship.
