B&M shifter and Evo ShiftLink installed

I installed the B&M shifter and EVO's ShiftLink this afternoon. No problems at all. Cable didn't need adjusting.

This is a fantastic conbination. The action is as close to "rifle bolt" as cable actuation can be; it's way better than I expected.

Glad to see everything went smoothly on the install. I agree with you on the throw and action required to shift now. Very precise and deliberate.

Hey Dock,
My setup with the B&M/Techart sounds like it has the same feel as does your B&M/Evo. I really like mine -- very positive, almost like it has a real gate. I assume that you have a few adjustment holes to choose from at the Evo end. Did you go as short as possible?

Just figured out that the Evo Shift Link is at the shifter and not the transmission. Wonder how a B&M/EvoSL/Techart setup would turn out?

I installed a combination of EVO/Ruf. The shift is short and accurate.

FYI--the under car kits from B&M, Ruf and TechArt are nearly identical (looks like the color might be the only difference!!), so you should have a similar experience to cjv with the EVO/Ruf.

Here's a post of mine from the 996 board showing the B&M:

Here's a pic of the Ruf:

andreas,

Use the 50% reduction on the "under" unit.

Am I understanding that you are using the stock shifter with the Evo/Ruf combination, Chad? From your descrition and pictures Poursha, you have done the same? Wonder if it would be over kill for me to add the EvoSL to my setup? I would gladly take a step in the direction of smoothness, but wouldn't want it to be any more notchy than it is already.

EvoSL has nothing to do with notchiness...just replaces the plastic crap with metal mainly for durability...

Bob,

I have the stock shifter, EVO short shifter and the Ruf short shifter. I have never understood the term notchy. My setup is not a silky smooth shift. By that I mean it does not go directly from one gear into the other. There is a slight "tug" in between. In other words it is not lightening fast. However there is no mistake in either up shift or down shift as to what gear you are in. The throw is very short, maybe one to two inches.

Sorry, but I can't describe it any better.

I have the stock shifter, and the B&M under car short shift kit, and love the shift feel. I used the highest (30%) shift throw reduction, and the shift feel is great. It has a tight feel (so the slop of the standard shifter is gone), but the increase in shifting effort is minimal, but welcome.

Bob - I think the EVO ShiftLink's best attribute is the durlin bushing. The OEM connector has a rubber bushing.

The "in-car" B&M with ShiftLink really makes for VERY solid "gates", i.e the shifter stops dead solid at the end of the travel during a shift. It's like it has been stopped by metel on metal contact. Someone who didn't know Porsche uses cables would swear the system was being actuated by steel rods.

The ShiftLink is made out of billet aluminum, so it won't break either.

I'm very happy with the setup; the car doesn't feel like a soft GT anymore (shifter wise).

OK you all talked me into it. Consensus is that the Evo Shift Link is an addition that is positive from both feel and durability stand points. I'll give it a go too.

Chad, I think that Dock's original description that "The action is as close to "rifle bolt" as cable actuation can be" comes closer to describing the feel than does the term notchy.

I agree with you all, I'll take the positive "rifle bolt action" feel my own setup gives me any day over something else that requires less effort and feels smoother, especially when on the track and needing to downshift quickly coming into a corner. Missing a shift like that at best slows you down, but at worst costs you much more than just time.
