I think tender springs are common in race setups, but for street setups, all that I've come across are helper springs. I can compress my JIC helper springs, and I my max bench ever was "only" ~315lbs. ; )

The closer in spring rates the tender springs are to the main springs, the smoother the transition. But in our cases, the helper springs are so weak that they are in no way even remotely close to being able to support the static weight of the car.
