Quick question !

Can someone varify for me the RPM drop between 3rd and 4th gears? Lets say next time any of you are out and about... take the car to 6500 rpms in 3rd and then shift to 4th( and please check the RPMs it dropped to).
I would like to get a consensus from two members so it is collaborated just in case one is off.
Sorry for this strange request but I have a hunch I'm working and it's bugging me to death.
best,
markski

+1 on Dr. Joe's question. The answer (a specific number of RPMs) is
dependent on how fast you're going when you change. You could
alternately just give us the RPM at which you shift from 3 to 4.
For instance if you're doing 5 mph in third when you change up, the
RPM drop is 233 RPM .

There should be a rpm gearing chart in either the owners manual or the service program

2nd Gear 81.8 -- 5194 From 6500 RPMS: 4220
3rd Gear 124.7 -- 6291 From 6500 RPMs: 5111
4th Gear 157.0-- 6859 From 6500 RPMS: 5573

If one is going in 3rd and running it up to 6500 RPMs then I assume all P cars will be doing approximately the same MPH... but I am not interested in MPH.... I am interested in the actual drop in RPMs between 3rd and 4th shifts when going lets say 6500 RPMs in 3rd.
best,
markski

I should have paid attention on the way to work this morning. Made a 3rd to 4th pull on the freeway, but only was watching the boost (which was only disappointing LOL).

On the way home tonight I'll make a pass, but you'll probably have an answer by then.

Ok then. According to the graph in the owners manual on page 208,
a change from 3rd to 4th at 6500RPM will drop the RPM to 5125RPM,
for a drop of 1375 RPM

Markski's tires are not stock size, that will represent a small difference...In my calculations I also factor estimated tire deformation.

Jean, I meant stock 295/30/18s... I just want to know for sure what it should be.... so some real data would be great.

?? The tire size, whatever it is, isn't going to change while he's
shifting from 3rd to 4th, so it's irrelevant to the RPM drop.

Joe, you are 100% right, I was thinking of the speed and talking of RPMs, apologies.

Mark, with stock tire sizes, drops are per/close to Joe's numbers. I can send you a spreadsheet if you want.

I believe the 4th gear RPM drop is also going to be dependent on how quickly the shift was made. It would seem to me that the slower the shift is made, the more speed is bled off, hence when the clutch comes out and re-engages the drivetrain the RPM would be lower than it would with a speed shift.
