Porsche Ceramic Brake Controversy?
Porsche Ceramic Brake Controversy?
Does anybody know what happened with the Porsche Ceramic Brake (PCCB) controversy from a few months ago (maybe a year)? Remember, some guy spent the big dollars to get the ceramic brakes on his car only to take them to a track event to find out that the indestructable/unwearable brake items he paid thousands for wore out during one track event?
I remember he was fighting with Porsche and they said the brakes were designed to be used on reasonable roads at reasonable speeds to attain the indestructable and unwearable traits. Otherwise, if you tracked them, they would turn to dust and essentially evaporate by the end of the day requiring a $12k brake job to get new ceramic rotors and pads to drive home.
If I remember correctly, the guy ended up taking off the PCCB and installing the standard brake setup and I know he was planning on talking to his lawyers to find the Porsche marketing campaign, but I don't know what happened after that...
Anybody know?

yes but the owners manule says that if you track the car its an automatic void warrenty so regardless the second you take the car to the track your warrenty for the brakes is gone. He should have said they were destroyed while driveing to work really really fast.

I'm sure there's crazy profit margin on the brakes and the car as a whole. Why would Porsche want to **** off a loyal customer by refusing to replace a set of brakes??? Seems like stupidity in the larger scheme of things.

This is simply a case of false advertising.
Regardless of the warranty, Porsche clearly stated that the PCCB brakes are "designed to cope with even the most extreme conditions on race track and road." I would assume one would have a strong case against Porsche if one has a problem with his/her PCCB brakes due to track usage and he/she purchased the PCCB prior to the brochure edit.

Jesus Dan, talk about talking softly and carrying a big stick! Yow. Yes, P is way out of line with their PCCB's and I cannot recommend them to anyone who plans on tracking. There are many posts all over about the woes of PCCB.
That was Mark GT2 on Rennlist.
He is a member of our local Porsche club, nice guy and a total track junky. He comes to the track events with his GT2 and his wifes 996TT.
Whenever he would take her car out with stock calipers and Pagid Orange pads, he said the braking was much more consistent and less fade.
He despised those brakes.
He has since removed the PCCB system and installed the Brembo GTR kit.

He did lose the arbitration case (if that's the one I read about a few months back). Porsche sent two lawers and the case was won on the text in the manual that says if you drive on track, you void your warranty...
I do not know if he is the same guy referenced above, or if he decided to pursue the issue further in civil court...

Here's the skinny on PCCB: They reduce UNSPRUNG weight drastically. They will last more than one event. Usually up to 6,000 miles on the track depending on driving styles/conditions. But they wear quickly with heavier cars, and more aggressive driving. They will be guaranteed for 180,000 miles of regular street driving. They will not be guaranteed for track use. If you have $6000 per replacement rotor and desperately need weight reduction, it is your answer. If $ is an option, the PCA club racers have changed out steel rotors with floating aluminum hubs and magnesium wheels to compensate for weight, heat dissipation, and durability. The brakes have never been claimed to reduce stopping distances, that is largely anectdotal. When you add all this up, just about every comment on this thread has an explanation. And by the way, there is currently a sale on PCCB at the dealers and the aftermarketers.
