Are all billet DVs created equally?

After beating up my hands installing new DVs for the first time, I learned that the Forge DVs that I chose require routine maintenance every "12,000 - 20,000 miles" or every few years -- uninstalling them, opening them up, lubricating them and possibly replacing the O-rings. I've found no mention of this type of maintenance for the other brands of billet DVs (such as Bailey's or EVOMS), although they look like they have a similar design (billet construction, sealed by O-rings, metal piston).

Why is it that only the Forge DVs require periodic maintenance? Is there some inherent difference in design? I'm just not looking forward to doing the DV install again any time soon, but I will do it if I have to (rather than risk damage to my turbos from lack of dumping of boost).

I have never heard this either, as a matter of fact, I have Forge DV's coming to me in the mail. I have only heard good things about them. One aspect I like is the upgradability to higher boost levels by changing out the internal spring. Having hands like a farmer, I too don't look forward to removing and cleaning/lubing them, if this infact is the case. Maybe I can get the wife to do it, she has small hands...hahahaaaa

This is a great question, ok so I dont have hands like a farmer but its still a PIA to do this, I am curious to know what the BEST DV's are, as most here I dont care about the $$ I just want to make sure they are great quailty with little to no maintenance.I have spoke with Dan from Vivid and he suggests I run a single blow off valve.....maybe going this route will stop the maintenance?

had problems with forges in the past. went with baily's due to good rep and no maintenance required. awe board sponser is the main distributors in these parts.

I'll be going with the EVOMS units. Alex from Sharkwerks recommended them and that's good enough for me. I'll be pinging them for the install as well...my hands don't need the drama. lol

Dont read to much that is on the internet They are all designed the same in most aspects. Stratmosphere, EVO, Forge. The outside just changes. All you have to worry about is them getting gunked up. This will probably not happen on the 996TT as much as it would on say a Subaru or EVO running 50/50 or atmospheric. You wont have to worry about relubing that much unless you notice a change in boost pressure or power delivery, that is a good thing to check.

maybe designed similar but not all the same quality construction. the forges I had had over sized holes tapped and threaded and the screws would come loose and the dv wuld come apart. how many times could you theoretically do this before the threads would become totally stripped. now if they had steel inserts that would be different. if you had to do this every year to remove re-lube the threads they wouldn/t last too long with this type of abuse.

I completely disagree about the quality on Forge valves. In fact most of the people that have their own valves were Forge dealers. www.forgemotorsport.com

that's cool you disagree, this is from my personal experience. there have been other issues with forge dv's I've had in the past on other vehicles like the valves sticking. since I switched to bailys' no problems whatso ever. no maintenance required no sticking no loose screws etc....

that is why it is a forum we all have cool opinions. But Kevin is right. So not sure which valve you have. they have screws on their EVO valve, but not Audi/VW/Porsche valve -

they must have changed the design. 2000-01 vag applications. socket cap screws aroung the top 2-piece design. I tossed em in the round file.

Oak -- sounds like you had an older model Forge DV. On the Forge website, they have links to disassembly instructions for maintenance, and those instructions refer to screws just like you state. I have the newest version, and the entire top just twists off/on as a complete unit solid metal construction (no screws).

I still don't know why only Forge recommends the periodic maintenance, as their design looks the same as EVOMS and Bailey's. I have resigned myself to the fact that I'll become a veteran of the DV install.

Anyone know who makes the metal ones that the dealerships sell? Are those Forge units too?

I'm using a single and it works great. It has an awesome (woosh) sound to it too...but you can't hear it from outside

I have the EVOMS DV's and I think one may be sticking as I have quite a bit of lag. I still reach full boost but there is a huge drop-off when shifting gears under full boost.

Anyone know how and what to lubricate the EVOMS DV's? Do they need to be dissasembled?

Adam
